Thousands of Sangsit Villagers Hold Bukakak Ritual

Thousands of Sangsit Villagers Hold Bukakak RitualCOINCIDING with the Galungan Day falling on Wednesday (Mar 27), thousands of customary villagers of Sangsit Dangin Yeh, Giri Mas village, Sawan subdistrict, held a ritual called ngusaba bukakak. It is a unique ritual held every two years in the customary village. The ritual is commenced with the making of bukakak paraphernalia in the Subak Temple.
Most bukakak paraphernalia are made from coconut and palm leaf. The making is carried out through mutual assistance with a sense of brotherhood. Having performed melis or melasti procession and carrying sarad of the Gunung Sekar Temple, the pilgrims were running like in trance condition to Subak Temple. From the Subak Temple, they carried the bukakak to the outermost courtyard of Gunung Sekar Temple. After accomplishing the ritual in the Gunung Sekar Temple, the bukakak paraphernalia was paraded onto the highway.

Procession of the bukakak ritual took place bizarrely and uniquely. When being brought to the highway, as if the bukakak itself determined the direction, while the villagers parading the bukakak just followed. A few years ago, the bukakak had even been carried to the Village Temple of Buleleng located about 15 kilometers. In the ritual held last Wednesday, the bukakak was brought to Segara Sangsit Dangin Yeh Temple.

Chief of Sangsit Dangin Yeh customary village, Jro Ketut Setiawan, said the tradition of ngusaba bukakak was recognized as a unique ritual performed by customary villagers of Sangsit Dangin Yeh from generation to generation. It symbolized the expression of gratitude to God after residents could enjoy the harvest in the rice fields or in the garden with great results. The bukakak paraphernalia was made from coconut and palm leaves containing black pig and other ritual means. (BTN/kmb)
