Anniversary at Tanah Lot TempleThousands of Hindus attended the piodalan or temple anniversary in the Tanah Lot Temple, Wednesday (Apr 10). From before sun rise until evening, the Hindu community from all regions in Bali and even from outside the region came to worship. “Myriad Hindus are always busy doing prayers on each anniversary in the Tanah Lot,” said the Operations Manager of Tanah Lot tourist attraction, I Ketut Toya Adnyana.

He said the pujawali ritual in the Tanah Lot Temple had been held from 05:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. and officiated over by temple priests from Beraban customary village. Other than in the Tanah Lot Temple, at the same time was also carried out the anniversary in the Batu Bolong and Penataran Temple located in the area in Tanah Lot.

According to Toya Adnyana, the ritual activity reached its peak at 1:00 p.m. till late at night. While one day earlier, (Apr 9) was held a purificatory rite for the sanctified effigies to local spring near the Tanah Lot Temple. “This ceremony is meant to purify the sanctified effigies that will be given ritual in the temple anniversary held on the following day,” he explained.

Such purificatory rite was resumed with the presentation of Rejang Dewa dance by the dancers from Beraban village. The Rejang Dewa meant to welcome the deities. “Therefore, all the dancers are girls who have not got their period in harmony with the meaning of ngabejian is to purify,” he said.

Indeed, the temple anniversary of Tanah Lot was crowded with visitors. Other than being crowded with the pilgrims (people saying prayers), it was also enlivened by domestic and foreign travelers. “It has become a tradition that every visitor would like to watch the procession of piodalan,” he said proudly.
