Like a thirst quencher, the desire of Papuan artists to make a performance in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) finally came true. A group of artists led by the XVII Cendrawasih Military Region Chief of Staff (Kasdam), I Made Agra, made its presentation in the BAF XXXV, Saturday (Jun 15). Although it was the first time, the group of black artists did not only make performance but also got involved in the opening parade.
Its appearance was truly captivating. In the art extravaganza held since 1978, the group presented a classical art of Papua. They were dancing while playing music. With a typical outfit, the performing arts of the Papuan team came in the second line after the Adi Merdangga traditional marching band with Shiva Nataraja Dance by SMKN 5 Denpasar Vocational School in collaboration with the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar.
The art presentation from the Island of the Birds of Paradise did not only make the audience amazed, but also drew the attention of the invited guests, including the president accompanied by his wife Ani Yudhoyono. “It’s wonderful,” said a tourist from the United States in non-current Bahasa Indonesia.
On the next day, the art team from Papua shook the Ardha Candra open stage, Denpasar Art Center. They presented a colossal composition carrying the triumph of male and female birds of paradise. Interestingly, the art composition was not only followed by the artists but also supported by 50 personnel of the IX/Udayana Military Command.
Papua Province being rich in the handicraft arts also took part in the exhibition of small industry and home handicraft. It was intended to introduce the local wisdom to the community at the national and international levels. Before appearing in the BAF, the art troupe had also made collaboration with the Graduate Student of the ISI Denpasar.
I Made Agra said that Papua Province felt to be honored because it had the opportunity to show off its ability in the world class event. Involvement of the Papua Province in the BAF did not only introduce the Papuan arts and culture, but also gave a remarkable impression for Indonesia. “They were very happy getting the opportunity to make a presentation in the BAF,” said Arga.
Similar impression was also revealed by the Director of Graduate Program of the ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Rai S., doubling as the advisor to the Papuan art envoy in enlivening the BAF. According to Prof. Rai, the presence of the Papuan art team in the BAF would have a positive impact on both parties. Aside from establishing a better cooperation in the future, it could also provide inspiration for the artists of Bali,” said Prof. Rai proudly. (BTN/015)
