Ni Wayan
Sulastri : Serombotan Seller
Ni
Wayan Sulastri has been a serombotan
vegetable seller since her childhood in
Banjar Pangi, Pikat Village, Dawan, Klungkung
Regency. Her mother passed her knowledge
on to Sulastri when the daughter used to
help her. Sulastri has now mastered the
trade as a profession starting from making
the spices up until the sale of the finished
dish.
After finishing Junior High School in her
hometown, she had saved up enough money
to move to Denpasar in search of a better
way of life. At first, she worked as a tailor
in the garment industry, but the low payment
made her return to her former profession
as a serombotan seller, a food specific
to Klungkung.
At the time, Denpasar seemed to have very
few such sellers, but her mother did not
agree with her decision to sell serombotan
in Denpasar. Sulatri then decided to move
to Uma Anyar Sari Market but with some trepidation
because of the risk the product might not
sell there.
Her fears were unfounded and her serombotan
became a hit at the market place. Sulastris
business was so successful that she managed
to buy a house at just off Jalan A. Yani
Street, where she lives with her husband,
Wayan Siter.
She moved her business from the market to
a shop verandah near her house, a place
she uses free of charge. Sulastri was happy
to see this new venue is as competitive
as the previous location. Ni Wayan Sulastri
increased her commodity of sale by adding
rice cooked in a packet made of woven coconut
leaves, rujak a delicious mixture
of fruits, and cold drinks of young coconut
fruit, as well as satay grilled meat, and
other nutritious food.
Serombotan itself is made of a mixture of
long beans, spinach, eggplant, Chinese bean
sprouts, bitter gourd, and Arachis hypogala
beans. Almost all Balinese, rich and poor
alike, like to buy Sulastris commodities
as seen from early visits of customers,
even before she has opened up her food stall.
