Bringkit Cattle Market
Beringkit is a
Banjar community belonging to Desa Mengwitani,
Badung Regency, and is popular due to
its role of holding the largest cattle
market of its kind in Bali. Beringkit
Market surpassed has former markets of
Kediri, Tabanan Regency, about 10 km west
of Beringkit on the Gilimanuk highway.
The
market itself is 7 km from Denpasar. Saturday,
8 February 2003, is Tumpek Andang
holy day, which will be a lively event
for the market in safeguarding cattle
and caring for their reproduction.
On every Tumpek Andang day, we always
perform a relatively large ceremony. We
offer Sesajen in stables, the place for
weighing cattle, and in the market temple.
The banten offerings are almost
the same as those given by other men,
but our banten is more superior
because of babi guling or
roast suckling pig which is added to the
offering, Chief of Beringkit Cattle
Market, A.A. Ngurah Agung Samudra, S.E.,
reported to Bali Travel News at the end
of January 2003.
The market was established in 1971 on
a 2-hectare area complete with stalls
for keeping cattle, administrative office,
site for weighing animals, parking lot,
and last but not least the Pura Melanting,
a temple for market traders. South of
the cattle market, there is a general
market, while to the west of it there
is the Central Office of Regional Market
Enterprise of Badung. There are gardens
and a housing complex in the east and
and north of the cattle market.
The
cattle market operates on Wednesdays and
Sundays from 04.00 am until 14.00 pm.
Sale and purchase deals among visitors
to the market usually take place during
the busy hours at 08.00am. Traders and
purchasers come not only from Bali but
also from Lombok and even Java.
In general, the cattle trade includes
some 1,500 calves for local slaughter
and cows especially for export to Java.
Various birds and chickens are on sale
for slaughter, local poultry, fish, and
various plants and fruit trees.
A cow is subject to an entrance tax of
Rp 3,000. Following a transaction conforming
to certificates issued by the authority
of the village of origin, the change of
ownership tax of Rp 8,000 is to be paid.
An overnight stay in the market stalls,
costs Rp 1,000 per animal. Change
of ownership certificate is of importance
to certify that the cow really belongs
to the right person and is not resulting
from theft, Ngurah Agung explained.
According to Ngurah Agung Samudra, from
Desa Carangsari, Badung, cows are usually
traded live in line with their respective
weights. The prices fluctuate in accordance
to demand for the animals.
On
Wednesday, 29 January (2003):(1)
cows of 250 300 kg were on sale
for Rp 10,200/kg, (2) cows of 300
350 kg/ Rp 10,400/kg, (3) cows of 350
400 kg/ Rp 10,700/kg, (4) cows
of 400 500 kg/ Rp 11,400/kg, (5)

January (2003), out of 1,649 cows were
sold 1,517 cows, resulting in the market
income in January of about Rp 165,000,000.

security guards. All the workers of the
market clean up prior to opening up market
operations. Meanwhile, on Fridays they
