Bangli,

Plaited
Bamboo from Bangli
Since
the 1980s, plaited bamboo handicrafts
have been a characteristic local product
from Bangli. It is fairly standard in shape,
design, pattern and also market segment.
The main consumers are local people. Available
products are household implements, like
kukusan, bakul, nampan, sidi wakul. Through
the development of the tourism world, plaited
bamboo products of Bangli became more widely
known amongst the people.
I
Ketut Darmaja (45), from Kayubihi, Bangli,
has been a plaited bamboo craftsman for
ten years . He noted that design modifications,
patterns and product shape have really determined
the development of the bamboo handicraft
industry in his village environment.
If the products are monotonous, it
is impossible to penetrate the outside market
segment or the export market, he explained.
So since the 1990s he has been introducing
new designs and types of implements to change
the image of bamboo handicraft products
from Bangli.
Darmaja now owns more than 70 kinds of plaited
bamboo products with different shapes and
designs. At first it was very hard to introduce
his products to consumers especially the
hotels and restaurants in Sanur and Nusa
Dua.
Now, Banglis plaited bamboo products
are well known and widely used. Darmaja
said his products are often used as interior
equipment, for exteriors, hotel set-ups,
household equipment, souvenir items and
many other equipment, like trash bins, which
not only functions as garbage place, but
also as a part of the interior arrangement
with artistic design. The products are in
the forms of lamp stands, bags, tissue boxes,
frames, towel holders, pen boxes, and many
other items that can be found in hotel rooms,
restaurants, private houses or office buildings.
Bamboo
Handicraft Center of Bangli
There are a few places that are commonly
known as central bamboo cane places in Bangli
Regency, such as Kayubihi, Banjar Tanggahan,
Sulahan, and other villages like
Penglipuran,
Tiga, Pengelumbaran, which is known as the
centre of gedeg handicrafts with various creative
shapes and designs.
According to the head of the Cooperative of
Industrial and Trade Official of the Bangli
Regency, Drs. Sang Made Suryawan, Banglis
Bamboo handicraft industry belongs to the
industry that resists economic crisis. This
thing is because the market segment of this
product is not only depending on the export
market, but also with the local market segment
and uses local raw materials. (Suka)
