Hand-made
Weavings from Buleleng Palace
Buleleng Regency
If you have a time
to visit Kirtya Building on Jln Veteran
in Singaraja, just try to go to the backyard
of this building for a while. There, you
can find almost 10 weavers who work hard
in producing all kind of shawls, sarongs,
endek and others. They work in traditional
ways, complete with a stone vile to boil
the ink and you will notice the sound of
tenun tools, which have their own characteristic
sound.
In
the backyard of Kirtya Building - a building
used for storing ancient Balinese literature
- there is a small house temple for making
hand-made cloth, which is owned by one of
the Buleleng Palace family members. This
handicraft is actually characteristic of
the northern part of Bali, whether the pattern
or the kind on cloth. A lot of visitors'
want to know, how to make this hand-made
cloth and usually buy a finished product.
I Gust Bagus Suelaputra, one of the Buleleng
Palace family members who manages this hand-made
weaving production said that the industry
was established in 1955. At that time the
product was named Lutung Kembar and then
was changed to Sinar Nadi, also it was changed
again to Puri Sinar Nadi Putra. Finally
the name of this home product is Puri Hasta
Kosala.
This home industry was managed from generation
to generation in the Buleleng Palace areas.
Formerly, Lutung Kembar (the first name
of the product) was very popular, spreading
the products to southern Bali or even abroad.
Besides that, this home industry was also
eventually visited by students and tourists.
