Laklak the
Mispronounced Cake
Foreigners
may sometimes mispronounce the name laklak
as [læklæk]. In Balinese it
means to eat in a vulgar way.
So please pronounce /a/ on the word laklak
as in the vowel in the word cup
for the correct pronunciation.
This kind of cake is made on a clay or metal
mold, the main ingredient is rice flour.
For a nice green color, add the extract
of suji leaves into the batter. The flour
is then added to some water, and then poured
into the mold when it is hot enough. Brush
the mold with grated coconut to make it
easier to take out the cake. Wait for some
minutes until the cake is well cooked. The
sauce simply consists of boiled grated coconut,
brown sugar and aromatic pandan leaf.
