Water Sport in Bali

Two experts from Europe, Dr. Knut (Norway) and Dr. Nick (Britain) as well as Balinese divers, in 1976 brought scuba diving, surfing and other marine sports to Bali’s beaches, including Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Everywhere cruise sightseeing and diving operators have sprung up to the advantage of tourism following the discovery of fascinating underwater beauty with a variety of colorful fish, anemones, and turtles.

Other aspects brought about by scuba diving development have been the establishment of Bali’s Chapter of POSSI All-Indonesian Diving Sport Association and pioneering steps towards the building of West Bali’s National Park with its white starling, through the development of diving area around Menjangan Islet on the western tip of Bali. Divers here have to be careful to avoid encounters with sharks. Nusa Penida Island has reaped a great deal of advantages from marine sports such as the progress of its people. (sur)
