The Inaugural Ceremony

NUSA DUA - The State Minister of Culture and Tourism, I Gede Ardika inaugurated 765 students of Bali Tourism Institute – Sekolah Tinggi Pariwisata (STP) Bali at Bali International Convention Centre (BICC), Nusa Dua on Friday April 25, 2003. In his speech in the closing ceremony, the minister told the audience of graduate students in the field of tourism, ‘Take a chance in challenging the future, the period after the Kuta Bomb Blast,’ he said. All of us agree that tourism has become one of South–East Asia’s foremost industries, so the minister stressed that the educated community must be visionaries in their own fields. He felt that the future of tourism in Bali was in good hands. ‘Through the warm hand shake of graduated students, I feel that all of them have a warm spirit,’ the minister added. There was a chorus group to accompany the ceremony, located on the balcony. In the opening ceremony, the Saraswati dance depicting the life and function of the goddess of science and literature was performed for invitees. Commenting on the dance, the minister said proudly that art is an element of culture, to strengthen the culture itself. (ls)

Bird Watching Training

NUSA DUA - Twenty-five staff from Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) Nusa Dua took eco-tourism bird-watching training around the Nusa Dua lagoon complex, in the first and second weeks of April 2003. The training is expected to improve the staff’s understanding about birds, bird conservation and the potential for bird watching in the area. The training was led by Anak Agung Gde Raka Dalem, an eco-tourism and environmental management researcher from the Research Centre for Culture and Tourism at Udayana University. Nusa Dua lagoon has great potential to be developed as a bird watching site, because it has a high diversity and number of birds, and is very close to premier tourist destinations in Bali such as Nusa Dua, Sanur and Kuta. In addition to endemic and migrant species as well as spectacular egrets have attracted bird watchers to the complex. (rd)
