Serangan Beach

In the last few years, Denpasar’s Serangan Beach has become more popular with tourists, particularly surfers. Every day more than 100 surfers visit Serangan Beach, which is located at the former Serangan Island. Since the sea between Bali and Serangan Island has been reclaimed, the area of Serangan now belongs to Bali again.

Serangan can be reached by car and is about 15 minutes from Kuta. East of Serangan is not populated. There are only plain stalls in the shape of gubuk (small houses), no clean water, and no electricity. Serangan has been likened to Kuta in the 1970’s.
Usually the tourists who are found at Serangan are Japanese and Australian teenagers. They come in the morning to surf, because the waves are ideal for surfing.
According to Wayan Mudira, Serangan Beach has already been the alternative for the Japanese and Australian surfers. “The location is close to Kuta yet nice and quiet,” said Wayan who works at ‘Surfing Stuff’ in Kuta.
Yurie Yoshida, agrees with Wayan, “Bali is nice but Serangan is beautiful,” said the Japanese girl who has been to Bali 4 times. When she was asked whether she was afraid to come to Bali for a vacation she replied in Balinese “Sing Ken Ken”, which means ‘no problem’.
The local teens of Serangan are being trained to be lifeguards so that they will be able to help any tourists in trouble. Beside tourists, the local villagers and Denpasar citizens also enjoy swimming at Serangan Beach, which is also known as Turtle Island.
