Harley Davidson’s 100th Anniversary
Touring Bali while Helping Others

On the occasion of Harley Davidson 100 years’ anniversary in August 2003, Indonesian Big Bikes (Motor Besar Indonesia) held a big event riding motorcycles around Bali. The event, named Bikers for Bali 2003, was held 15th –16th May with 500 big bike participants. The tour set off from the parking area of Bali Discovery Hotel, Kuta, and was started by the Governor of Bali, Dewa Made Beratha.

The Publicity Coordinator of Bikers For Bali, Indra S. Said, said this event is used as a media and medium for doing social action by giving the scholarship for talented Balinese students who are unable to fund their own education. This social aid was dedicated to 682 elementary school students in Karangasem, East Bali. Each student will receive Rp200.000. ‘Besides this, it also contributed 2.5 tons of rice for the Kemala Bhayangkari foundation that cares for 25 fatherless children,’ he said while adding that a further Rp.5.000.000 in cash was also being dedicated to Jimbaran Village, which is in the process of making temple.
When asked why Bali had been targeted for ‘Bikers for Bali 2003’, Indra, also one of the participants, said that Bali is the most beautiful place for the bikers. Besides that, his team also wants to help the government to revive tourism in Bali after the bombing last year. ‘This event is also one of a series of activities of “Bali for the World” of the government program to help Bali recover after the bomb blast,’ he said.
Besides the local bikers, foreign bikers also joined the event including John Nany, Harley (USA), Soo, Harley (Singapore), and Calvin (Australia). Organizations and groups belonging to Big Bikes in Indonesia also participated such as the Harley Owners Group Jakarta Chapter, Harley Owners Group Bali Chapter, Harley Owners Indonesia Foundation, and the Antique Motors Club of Indonesia. They all seemed enthusiastic and finished the tour in Bedugul.

Sudirman Street, Sesetan Street, Ponegoro Street, Teuku Umar Street, Imam Bonjol Street, and Legian Street and was guarded by Traffic Police Officers from Poltabes (Big City Police) Denpasar.
Syarif Hidayat, Branch Manager of Satelindo Bali – Nusra (South East Nusa), the main sponsor of Bikers For Bali 2003, said this event was a way for Satelindo to participate in Bali Tourism Recovery program. ‘We realize Bali is a beautiful place for the Bikers. This event is a warming-up program toward the national program of Bikers for Bali 2003 that has as its theme Ride In Unity With Mentari,’ he said.
