Saying Goodbye on Sanur Beach

Valma (71) and Jim Cregan (75) came to Bali for the first time in April 1983 on their honeymoon. Valma was widowed with 4 children and Jim was a widower with 7 children when they met.
For Valma, her first vacation was a unique memory. It was her first experience of travelling on plane (West Australia-Bali) and the remarkable scenery of Bali impressed her, so she continued to come to Bali every year. Thus, this couple had visited Bali about 20 times following that first trip. “That’s why, when my wife realized that she had cancer, she wished to be cremated and her ashes scattered on Sanur beach,” said Jim to Bali Travel News after carrying out his wife’s request on Sunday (15/6) on Sanur beach.
Jim told of his wife’s death on Monday 10 March 2003. Valma had been feeling something wrong with her stomach since February, and was cared for in hospital up to early March. The doctors knew they were unable to save her life, so they allowed her to go home. Jim cared for his wife at home for a couple days and later on Sunday (9/3) she went into a coma. He took her back to the hospital, and the next day she passed away.
The Cregens lived in the small town of Mandurah, about 80km to the south of Perth. They have 11 children, 19 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. “Most of them have visited and enjoyed Bali,” said Jim while adding that Bali for them was not just a tourist place. “The people and nature attracted us. There will be no missing a year, so we came to Bali. Good Bye Val! ”

125 Witnesses in Bali Bombing Trial
3 Australian Survivors Testify

The ongoing trial of defendant Amrozy Bin Haji Nurhasyim alias Rozy Bin Haji Nurhasyim in the Bali bombing case continued with evidence from 125 witnesses (including 3 Australia survivors), testifying before the general prosecutor. The 125 testifying witnesses come from all sorts of professions, such as the official who checked for evidence from cars and the bombing tools, even the Chief of Badung Tourism Office who gave details about the bomb’s effect on tourism in Bali. “There was an exodus of tourists, who directly left Bali following the bomb blast on 12 October 2002,” said witness Oka Darmawan, the Chief of Badung Tourism Office in his testimony.
Also testifying were Ali Imron (33) and Hernianto (26), who were involved with defendant in planning the Bali bombing. Both of these witnesses discussed the scheduled meeting at the residence of Hernianto’s parents-in-law in Solo, Central Java on 22 August 2002. They gave the names of those present at the meeting; they were Imam Samudra, Amrozy, Idris, Dul Matin, Mucklas, Abdul Ghoni, Zulkarnaen and Ali Imron. “Those were the meeting’s participants, Your Honor,” said Hernianto, while denying that he took part in the meeting itself. “I was only serving up their drinks.”
The General Prosecutor, Urip Tri Gunawan SH, after the trial led by Judge I Made Karna Parna, SH, said, “I appreciate the witness’s(Ali Imron-red) honesty who revealed the truth in this court.”
The witnesses’ testimonies during the trial of the Bali bombing and the defendant Amrozy have impressed the prosecutors. They are 95% confident that the charges have been proved. “This progress has been significant in presenting the facts to the court, so it may help the Judge Council in the consideration of this case,” said Urip Tri Gunawan.
Imam Samudra Trial
The trial of the main defendant Imam Samudra alias Abdul Azis alias Abu Umar alias Faiz Yunzahar alias Hendri alias Kudama, also attracted a lot of visitors to the court. The defendant Imam Samudra claimed to be the commander and planner of the 12 October tragedy. Imam Samudra’s trial was led by Judge I Wayan Sugawa accompanied by four Judge members - Arif Supratman SH, Linton Sirait, I Gusti Lanang Dauh SH and Ifa Sudewi SH.
The 43-page Summons of the JPU (Jaksa Penuntut Umum/General Prosecutor) that was read by the prosecutor, I Nyoma Dila SH, declared that Imam Samudra is accused of committing 3 crimes - the Bali bombing (2002), the robbery of the gold shop Elita Indah in Serang (Banten, West Java), and the Christmast Eve 2000 bombing in Batam (2000).
For Bali’s bombing, Imam Samudra’s role is of great importance. Besides being the planning commander, he was one of the decision makers of the Bali bombing through the meeting in Solo. “He was also as the bomb’s designer,” said the prosecutor.
Imam Samudra, born in Serang-Banten on 14 January 1970, faces the death penalty or life imprisonment. But, after the reading of the charges, Imam Samudra’s legal team immediately brought forward an objection note (exception). The exception, read by Qadhar Faisal SH requested the Judge Council to reject the JPU’s summon because it violated the legal basis of UUD 1945. They argued that Perpu No1 and 2 that were drawn by the prosecutor as the accusation cannot be legally accepted, because the Bali bombing happened on 12 October 2002, while the Perpu became law on 18 October 2002.
However, the Council of Judges led by the Judge I Wayan Sugawa, SH, rejected the exception of the lawyer’s team and accepted the JPU accusation, so the trial of Imam Samudra for the Bali bombing will continue. (BTN/013)
