Banyuning:
A Center of Bulelengs
Traditional Games
Children of Kelurahan
Banyuning, Buleleng Sub-Regency and Regency,
have had the privilege of performing old-age
traditional games so far preserved due to
their merit by playing them up to now on
the occasion of odalan ceremony at the local
Pura Pemayun on Buda Kliwon Ugu. Even the
PKB Balis Annual Arts Festival prefers
to always invite the children living on
the eastern rim of Singaraja, the capital
city of Buleleng Regency, in order to show
not less than 10 games. Wayan Sujana Jedur
has stood behind the children leading them
in the game development.
Among
the games selected for shows are fake horse
riding (jaran-jaranan), attorney (jaksa-jaksaan),
sliding (slodor-slodoran), naga balon (inflated
dragon), guessing (tebak-tebakan), and searching
(alih-alihan). The most popular in the eyes
of Bulelengs children is the jaran-jaranan,
played by two opposing groups of children.
Each group consists of three members, divided
respectively into two horses and drivers
sitting on both horses backs. The
opposing drivers fight by pressing, mocking
and elbowing each other with the goal of
knocking down ones enemy to win the
contest.
Mr. Jedur has established a sanggar group,
known as Sanggar Gelitik of Banyuning, etymologically
meaning ever active and creative association,
for the sake of preserving and developing
the games by way of collecting data on associated
children and training them towards perfection.
