Death
Sentence for Bali Bomber
After
calling and interviewing more than 55 witnesses,
including three Australian survivors, the
team of prosecutors led by Tri Urip Gunawan
were convinced that the smiling suspect
of the Bali bombing, Amrozi, had been part
of the conspiracy to bomb Bali. At the trial
on Monday 30 June, the prosecutors wanted
Amrozi to be given the death sentence.
The prosecutor told the court that Amrozi
and other key suspects of the Bali bombing
had planned and carried out the bomb at
Paddys Café and Sari Club in
Kuta and at the American Consulate in Renon
on 12 October 2002. The blast caused the
deaths of hundreds of tourists, destroyed
buildings and shops, damage public facilities
like the telephone, water and electricity
networks. Apart from that, according to
the prosecutor, this act of terrorism caused
the drop in Balis tourism industry,
the slowdown of investment on the island,
and the suffering of people who lost their
jobs.
At the previous hearing, the defense lawyers
argued that the role of Amrozi in the plot
was not as a planner but only as an assistant,
for which he should deserve as light a sentence
as possible. The prosecutor, however, told
the hearing that the mechanic Amrozi was
one of the planners, since he had been involved
in various meetings prior to the Bali blast
and had had responsibility for buying explosive
materials, sending them to Bali and buying
and modifying the L-300 that became the
car bomb.
The prosecutor also told the trial that
Amrozi himself admitted his role by saying
that the Bali bombers had had an equal position
in carrying out the attack on the US and
its allies in Bali.
There will be at least another four hearings
before the verdict for Amrozi is delivered
by a panel of judges led by Made Karna.
At the next hearing, planned for Monday
14 July, Amrozi and his defense will deliver
their argument to avoid the maximum penalty.
Meanwhile, Idris, another key suspect in
the Bali bombing, who was responsible for
arranging money and accommodation in Bali,
was arrested a few weeks ago. He was captured
in Medan and has been detained in Bali for
further investigation. (BTN/04/013)
