Bagus
Natya :
A Young Balinese Puppeteer
The
Dalang (Puppeteer) plays an essential part
in every wayang kulit (leather puppet) show.
While functioning as the director of the
play, the puppeteer also performs the actions
of these two-dimensional puppets. A puppeteer
should master the art of dance, drama, and
literature.
Bagus Widjna Bharatanatya, a 14 year-old
boy, is one of the Balinese teen puppeteers.
He has been a skilled puppeteer from a very
young age. At the age of 7, with great bravery,
he performed a topeng (mask) dance without
ever having studied before. When he reached
the age of 9, he could perform several difficult
dances fluently including the Baris dance,
Jauk dance, Gopala dance, Satya Brasta dance
and Kebyar Duduk dance.
Natya, as he is known, also shows a magnificent
talent in karawitan art. In the childrens
Gong Kebyar group in his home in Babakan
sub-village, Sukawati, Gianyar, Natya is
an ugal instruments player (giying),
responsible for leading and controlling
the gamelan (instrument) rhythm. This wonder
boy can play the most difficult of Balinese
gamelan, gender wayang (music instruments
of puppet show), proficiently.
His skill as a puppeteer was supported a
lot by his environment; Sukawati Village
is famous as the source of Balinese leather
puppets. He learned his skills from his
grandfather, the famous senior puppeteer
I Wayan Nartha (62). When he was 12 years
old he made his first performance on stage,
mekebah, at Pura Desa Sukawati,
presenting the story of Arjuna Wiwaha.
Afterwards, TVRI Denpasar profiled him on
one of its programs. At years Bali
Arts Festival, Bali TV also recorded and
broadcasted his performance. Now, this teenager
who has just moved up to the third level
of junior high school at SLTP Negeri Sukawati,
Gianyar, is continuing to study hard to
master the puppet art as well as the other
art forms.

El
Lisaling :
The Snake Queen of Cobra Palace
El
Lisaling, born on 30 March 1981, is skilled
in cooking traditional food by processing
ingredients especially adapted from animals,
especially the cobra. She has been doing
this since the age of twelve following training
by her parents, Hadi Hatari and Iin Marlina.
Lisaling is the second of four children
in the family, which lives in Bali at Ngurah
Rai Bypass No. 24X (close to Dewa Ruci Statue),
Kuta. They later decided to pioneer a restaurant
business called Restaurant Istana
Raja Kobra (King Cobra Palace
Restaurant) with its head office in
Jakarta.
Gradually the restaurant flourished and
now serves food of from a wider choice.
The commodity sold includes not only animal-based
foodstuffs but also various accessories
produced from snakeskin and pearls. Such
a development has taken place due to the
effect of tourism. We were motivated to
extend our trade by adding the sale of accessories,
presuming that after a meal consumers like
to buy the things, the lady told Bali
Travel News recently.
Miss Lisaling, who at present is a six-semester
student at the private National Education
University in Denpasar, claimed speedy tourism
development in Bali has encouraged the restaurants
to extend beyond the local market. Now tourists
frequently visit to enjoy the restaurants
delicacies. It has been a great surprise
for us, she said. Even during the
economic crises following Balis Black
October, there restaurant has still been
visited but to a lesser degree. She is optimistic
about the future.
There are also medicaments made of ingredients
gained from the cobra as a mix of its blood
and its gall. Some of the medicines also
take the form of capsules sold to other
regions of the country. From the oil gained
from cobra, there are ointments for external
use, for instance (1) Bulus A,
(2) Bulus Bumbung and (3) Bulus
Consulate, respectively (1) for providing
men with greater sexual potential; (2) cleaning
facial skin and (3) giving large and full
breasts.
The restaurant also has a delicious menu
on sale made of the animal flesh, including
cobra satay and soup, fried monkey, iguana,
and bat. Miss Lisaling expressed pride in

such as snake to produce something advantageous
