Traveling Abroad Through Art of Dance


Even though he is still old in age he still has the competence in performing Balinese dance. ‘Agem’ (the body position) and ‘Tetuek’ (the dance rule) are still can perfectly performed by him. Such as the complicated Kebyar Duduk dance and Baris dance that are orderly expressed in perfection style. The ‘Taksu’ (spiritual talent spirits) from each of his staging dance always presented lively, as if he does not dancing by his own.

That is the figure of Ida Bagus Sutedja Manuaba, BA, who always dances passionately in each of his performance. He has been performing variations of these dances since a long time ago. In view of ths he has just received an accreditation for old artisan of Bali, on last Monday (30/6), he directly performed Kebyar Duduk and Baris dance. He mesmerized the audience, including the vice governor of Bali, I Gusti Bagus Alit Putra, who was present at Ksirarnawa Building, Denpasar Cultural Park.
This man of Tegal Kuning sub village, Bongkasa village, Abiansemal sub district, Badung regency, started working on his carrier since play a part in Indonesian art mission to the overseas countries. In 1975, the art mission that took the name ‘Borobudur’, traveling abroad to various European countries, like Holland, England, Belgium, Austria.
The art mission that was lead by the former Indonesian vice president, Sultan Amengku Buwono X, aimed at improving the renovation fund for Borobudur monument. On that occasion, this dance and tabuh (instrumental) artist who born on 20 January 1945, performing his specialty dances, Kebyar Duduk, Baris, Legong, and other dances.
The alumnus of Kokar (Sekolah seni Tari dan Karawitan) – School of Dance and Traditional Music Instrumental – in 1967, graduated from his collage at ASTI (Akademi Seni Tari Indonesia) – Academy of Art Dance – in 1970. Besides as a dancer, he has also successfully worked as an instructor of Balinese dance and tabuh at Sakura country, Japan, for a year. He also went to Rumania in 1993, and participated in the event “International Festival of Musical Folklore Hora village Museum”. In addition, for his talented marvelous skills, he was invited on stage in several big cities at USA in 2002.
His talented skill in performing several dances and playing the Balinese traditional music instrument, as if the main potential expertise for this father of three children in traveling abroad and most of archipelago islands, such as Java, Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara. He started this trip on his retiring age, at the end of the year 2001.
This simple figure of a man who can claim fame to a number of great achievements in Balinese dance and tabuh art is known as an active person in his daily life. In his teen age, he was renowned as a talented Balinese dancer, and as the tabuh expertise of playing several Balinese music instruments as well. Now, he guides the youth to penetrate the Balinese dance and tabuh. “ The Balinese traditional art should be bequeathed earlier to our next generation to keep the Balinese art and culture can still be ‘ajeg’ (stand still) and eternal,” is what he said to Bali Travel News.
He also founded several art groups in his home village and other districts in Bali. He already founded, more or less, 30 art groups or sekaa gong (traditional music group) in different areas. Of his solid work and continuous dedication in arts, he has received several accreditations, like Seni Kerti Budaya from Badung Regency administration, an award from President and Vice President of Indonesia, also an international award for his abroad visit contribution. “I totally forgot when it was,” said Jro Nyoman Semarini, his wife.
While fixing his dance costume, he said,” I will still dedicate myself to Balinese art and culture, by influencing my skill for the next youth. Because, “keajegan” (eternality) of Bali is depends on arts and culture, which is also a tourism attraction for the overseas and domestic tourist as well.”
