I Wayan Dudet, Undagi From Bangli

The artistic blood that descends from his parents is the main asset of I Wayan Dudet in occupying profession as tukang bade/bade maker (wadah). His grand father, Jero Mangku Puseh is a well known bade maker artist. Bade is the Balinese coffin with great measured. Meet at his dwelling house, at Demulih Bangli, Dudet was still busy in making a carving type for bade/wadah, which is going to be used for ceremony preparation of ngaben massal (Balinese cremation ceremony for many people) that is executed by Demulih village next August. Even though he is 68 years old, his longing fortitude in arts has never vanished. For proof, he never rejects the public order.

His existence as a bade/wadah maker is unreleased from his social realm. As long as the society need for his subservience indeed, especially related with ritual ceremony execution, he will keep being involved with his talented skill. The continuously ritual ceremony in the society, whether regular or incidental, force Dudet to keep served for the society importance.
In accordance to Dudet, the profession as bade maker (undagi) is as social worker. “Its not the right place to demand a proper repayment,” he said while adding, for him the happiness can not measured with cash, even those are unavoidable especially for life need.
As undagi (the Balinese constructor), he specializes in bade/wadah making and other ritual equipment of ngaben/pelebon ceremony. In working, he always prays for guidance to God in His manifestation as Begawan Swakarma. And also, he uses the Astha Kosala Kosali Bade guideline. “This guideline is as the basic. But, the interpretation and adjustment for local environment is needed certainly,” said Dudet who also is the former caretaker of PHDI (Parisadha Hindu Dharma Indonesia-Indonesian Hindu Association) of Susut district, Bangli regency.
Besides as undagi, Dudet is also a mask artisan. He often plays as dance-figure of ‘penasar’ (punakawan-loyalty servant) in mask dance. His conveying advises often reflected as guidance by the public. Perhaps it caused, when he was formerly active as a civil servant, he is a head seat field informer worker.
