Arts and Sports Competition in Northern Kuta

Arts and Sports Competition – Pekan Olah Raga dan Seni (PORSENI) event is held for each year in Badung Regency. Therefore, this competition event is executed merrily to commemorate the 58th Indonesia’s Independence Anniversary. The ones that involve in this activity are not only come from the northern Kuta surrounding, but participating also of government institution and public schools.

“This year will become a great year,” said Sub district head of northern Kuta I Nyoman Predangga, SH to Bali Travel News in his office recently. It is assumed, the main purpose of that event is for sports socializing within the society of northern Kuta sub district. Expected also, this event may fertilize the unity and integrity as the pace in creating peacefully and concordance. “Personally, I expected that the solidarity will appear in the middle of discussion within Indonesian people,” he said explicitly. Like the previous year, PORSENI is filled with several arts contest such as Dharma Wacana (religious speech contest), Mekidung competition, and tipat plaiting competition, while the sports competition will be of tarik tambang (tug-of-war), metajog (run while using a high-bamboo stick on feet), lari karung (rucksack sprint contest), and lari penganten (couple sprint). All contests will set aside at Tibubeneng Park. The opening day (9/8-2003) will kick off with a dance performance and contestant parade. The ceremony will start from 08.00 WITA with a performance of gong massal gymnastic consists of 450 of woman participants from PKK (woman welfare organization) and government institution employees of northern Kuta sub district.The sport competition is followed by the villager and sub villager of northern Kuta surrounding. They will compete on 10 August 2003, starting from 8 am until finish. Each Tug-of-war team consists of 10 men with knock-down system. Metajog competition is only in the man’s category that is followed by a youth group from local village and sub village. Each village prepares two contestants who carry a bamboo tajog measuring 2.25 meters high and foot holder of 60 cm. The evaluation will start from the first round, semi final, and final round. Lari Karung (Rucksack sprint contest) will be of the woman relay race with a set distance. As the competitors are from the PKK of entire northern Kuta village and sub village that set each of its three contestants. Lari Penganten (couple sprint) is sort sprint contest of man and woman in couple. The contestant is of youth group that set for maximum of 2 couples. For the arts competition (Dhama Wacana, Mekidung and tipat plaiting), that will held 12 August 2003 at Wantilan Pura Peti Tenget Kuta. Mekidung competition there is a group competition consists of man and woman of 10 persons who sing for kidung from memory. The competition will starts on 8.30 am until finish, and followed villagers, sub villagers, as well as the government institution, like SK, Health Center Clinics, Cadisdik, Teacher coordinator of Canggu, Teacher coordinator of Tibubeneng, Teacher coordinator of Kerobokan, sub district office staff, Pekaseh, NIVO Office and Forkom Kaling of entire northern Kuta district.For Tipat Janur plaiting competition, the contestants are both man and woman aged between 17 – 35 years old. In time limit of 40 minutes, the contestants will make 10 sorts of tipat, such as Tipat Sidakarya (25), Tipat Bagia (20), Tipat Lepet (15), Tipat Dampul (10), Tipat Gong (7), Tipat Kukur (5), Tipat Sirikan (5), Tipat Nasi (5), Tipat Gatep (5), and Tipat Taluh (3). Each village and sub village in northern Kuta will represent by 2-3 contestants. This Tipat contest will start from 9 am with the evaluation category based on accuracy of time, tidiness, numbers of tipat that made within the limited time, quality result of tipat, and the important category is the shape of tipat itself. Dharma Wacana contest will be of man and woman between 17 – 30 years old with the Balinese dress. The theme of Dharma Wacana is “Commemorating Saraswati Day” with time duration 10-15 minutes. The contestant may pick any title as long as it still connects with the theme. Each the village and sub village will represent by one man and one woman contestant. The village and sub village that include in northern Kuta are Tibubeneng Village, Dalung Village, Canggu Village, Kerobokan District, Kerobokan Kaja District and Kerobokan Kelod District. Each competition will present the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner with trophy, certificate, and cash money, while the expectation winner (1st, 2nd and 3rd) will gets certificate and cash money. (BTN/015)
