The
Uncovering of the Bali Blast Case
His
working paper was extended by Inspector
General Police Drs. Made Mangku Pastika
in front of the distinguished guests and
the participants on the event of 2nd Interpol
Disaster Victim Identification Pacific Rim
Group Meeting that took place at The Grand
Bali Beach Hotel, Sanur, last Tuesday night
(30/7).
On
October 12th 2002 a tragic event occurred
in Bali. Three separate bombs where detonated
causing hundreds of deaths and casualties,
and a vast amount of material damage.
This tragedy attracted international attention,
because up until this occurrence Bali was
known as a safe and secure tourist destination,
and most of the victims in the incidence
were foreign tourists.
After the bomb blast the police started
comprehensive investigation and helped organize
the evacuation of the victims. They got
help from local communities, volunteers
and other organizations. The police also
formed a team of investigations to uncover
the incidents. Several countries supported
them.
The crime scene was thoroughly searched
through by forensic experts from various
countries using high technology. Within
a short time of evidence being gathered
from the crime scene, police were able to
link this evidence to several prime suspects,
which resulted in their apprehension.
After interrogating the prime suspects and
evaluating the evidence, it led police to
the conclusion that these suspects were
just a few of a well-organized terrorist
network. Some prime suspects are currently
facing the court of law, whilst others are
still wanted.
Investigations are continued, and strong
indications show that the perpetrators Jamaah
Islamiah and eventually may lead to Al-Qaeda.
Several of the perpetrators are known to
be the organizational structure of Jamaah
Islamiah.
The successful uncovering of the Bali bomb
blast would not have been possible without
the high technology tools and experts from
friendly countries. This includes identifying
bodies of victims that were unrecognizable.
The investigation team still faces difficulties
in completing the uncovering of the network
behind the Bali bombers, in spite of which
their morale is still high in fighting terrorism.
Indonesian Police have collaborated with
American, Australian, Japanese Police to
set International security standards to
prevent and defect any further terrorist
attacks in Bali. (BTN/*)
