Melons
from Gianyar
As
the city of arts, Gianyar also contains
a village famed for melon producer. Most
of melons that are sold in Denpasar come
from this village.
Temesi
is a village located in ianyar Sub District,
Gianyar Regency. It is about 23 km to the
east of Denpasar or about 2.5 km from the
city of Gianyar. For the great amount of
melons that are produced by this village,
thats why Temesi village is renowned
as the melon center.
Last August, Bali Travel News met I Wayan
Subanya, a melon farmer from Temesi village.
According to him, this village people improved
the melon plantation since 1995. About
1995, the village farmer of Temisi started
cultivated melon seriously, because the
result that meant that the income would
make a big profit, he said while explaining
there are three melon types that are cultivated
by Temesi village, which is action
melon, AG-15, and Sakata melon.
He explained, the characteristic of action
melon appears on its skin that is green
colored and decorated with plaited things
like white seine. The inside part of action
melon is white colored. Melon AG-15 has
a sweet and stickier taste. The outer skin
is yellow and its ripe inside part
also of yellow colored. Melon Sakata has
yellow skin and of red colored inside it.
This kind of Sakata melon is often sold
in the supermarkets in Denpasar.
For the Balinese people, especially from
Gianyar, melons usually use as one fruits
that complete the sesajen (Hindus ritual
offering). The price of a fruit depends
on the fruit category and quality. Melon
of A class (super) can reach the weight
2.5 kg is sold Rp.2.000/Kg. The melon plant
will produce a fruit after 2 months age.
Melon can also be processed and become a
fresh juice that quenches a thirst. (BTN/033)
