Badung The Center of Tourism

Brawa Beach A Calm and Ideal Site to Surf!

Almost all beaches in Bali have special features that make them beautiful and pleasant. However, not all contain similar charming nuance and excellence. For example, Brawa Beach located in the Northern Kuta sub district of Badung, 11 km away from Denpasar, or 10 km from Kuta, has an exquisite and calm nuance to relax, meditate and surf.

According to Ni Wayan Wati, a souvenir seller, mostly tourists come to this beach to enjoy the sea and view. “On the pathway to Brawa Beach they feel the soft white sand underfoot, view the hollow of the beach, and watch the fisherman’s activities. Sometimes the tourist wants to try fishing with the fisherman. Because of the language barrier, they can only communicate with body language,” she said.
By the way, the Balinese activity of doing ritual and religious ceremonies also absorb the tourist’s interest. A ritual activity often performed by people at the beach almost every day, is melukat, (cleaning our selves), nganyut, (throwing ashes to the sea as a part of the ngaben ceremony), melasti (purify the deities), and so on. The tourist can capture these ceremonial series, with photographs.
Wati explained that besides sightseeing, Brawa Beach is a perfect venue for horse riding. Whilst on horseback, the tourist can watch the natural beauty of the area, and the local villager’s activities accompanied by a guide.
Wati said, tourists that are fond of horse riding are typically from America and Australia. “Regularly, they walk along Kuta Beach and return. Moreover, some people even do a journey until Tanah Lot Beach, Tabanan,” she asserted.
Brawa Beach is calm and quiet, according to Wati, and is perfectly sited for meditation activity. Many people perform meditation whether in the morning or at evening, mostly are Balinese.
She asserted that after the Kuta Tragedy on the12 October 2002, a number of tourists’s visiting Brawa Beach was less, mainly surfers. “Things totally diversed after the bomb-blast,” said Wati. This situation caused an awful effect to Wati, who entrusts her life on selling souvenirs. “In one day, I can only earn Rp. 20.000, and sometimes do not earn any money at all. Fortunately, the village that organizes the area did not demand any retribution. I used to pay Rp. 100.000 per month,” she said.
Brawa Beach is a perfect site to surf because of its big waves. The Beach is usually crowded with surfers, local and foreign. Tourists visit Brawa Beach every day, if only just for sightseeing, horse riding, or surfing. Tourists who stay at nearby beach hotels, together with local people from Kuta, Nusa Dua and Sanur, continually come to conquer Brawa beach, usually to perform surfing.
According to Nyoman Merta, a lifeguard, surfers’ tend to gather at the beach on special days such as tilem (dark moon) and purnama (full moon). The beach is full of surfers because of the huge waves. “However, regardless of how crowded it is, it still can not compare to the situation before the bomb-blast tragedy. But in last few months, incoming tourist’s and surfers’ visits have increased, but then decreased sharply following the recent Jakarta hotel bombing” he said. Tourists who visit Brawa Beach of late come from Korea, Japan, America and Sweden. (BTN/015)
