with Terang Bulan cake, a modern cake. However,
it was not merely a reunion gathering, but

Huh,
I dream last night meeting a cheap cake
as you are, said Terang Bulan.
Hey, didnt you realize, my cute
shape, I am still popular in markets since
your great grand parent until now,
Begina paid it back.
Ah, you are nothing to me. My delicious
taste powder, eggs, and butter poured into

it is very attracting, whereas, you are
only made from pressed sticky rice, dried
and fried out, and unattractive, whilst
after the ceremony is over, you will be

Terang Bulan.
Begina looks angry. The red spot inside
its round shaped flares up.

Jaja
Bali
Jaja,
in Indonesian means jajan, (or cake in English).
Jaja Bali is a cake that is made in Bali
by Balinese. Jaja Bali can be categorized
into two terms, jaja banten and jaja daar.
Jaja banten is especially made for religious
ceremonies, whilst jaja daar is a cake to
consume. The difference between jaja banten
and jaja daar, is its making period. The
making of jaja daar can be made anytime
if you have the material and desire. It
is different from jaja banten that is made
to exact and related times in keeping and
written within the Balinese calendar.
Depending on the dewasa (good day), it should
make by a special person. The person who
makes it should ever be mewinten (doing
a special ritual for that purpose). Each
village has several people for that reason.
They carry out this special duty to make
jaja banten for offering needs. There are
several kinds of jaja banten; jaja suci,
jaja prangkat, jaja japit, jaja pulegembal,
jaja bebangkit and jaja jerimpen. Jaja suci
is the cake that is made to complete the
offering of banten suci. Banten suci is
needed to perform the high level ceremonial
rite. Thus, the names of the cakes are associated
with the name of banten (offering) that
is required.
The above kinds of jaja are small in shape
and can be consumed after being used in
the offering. The cakes, following the offering
are then processed into cattle or pork food.
The offering cake (jaja banten/jajan upakara)
is the bigger one, like jaja uli, jaja gina,
jaja satuh, jaja iwel and many others. Commonly,
the Balinese rarely make a cake just for
eating. They usually eat the cake if they
are making an offering, because as they
believe, the food that is fine to consume,
is the food used as the offering.
When they make a cake, they will use the
unfinished rice to eat, collecting the rump
rice residue to make the cake. This cake
is known as jaja sengauk. Its easy to prepare.
Dry the rump rice under heat then dinyanyah
(fry without using oil) until a little bit
overcooked. Soak with cold water and mix
with coconut rasp, adding a bit of salt.
And now its ready to eat.
Jaja aron aron is different from the above,
Jaja aron-aron is made from uncooked rice.
This cake needs no special materials. Separating
the uncooked rice carries out the making
process. The name, jaja aron-aron, comes
from the word aru, which means half-cooked
rice. This half-cooked rice is used as the
basic ingredient of jaja aron-aron. The
mixture combination is similar to jaja sengauk,
which uses the coconut rasp. This cake is
usually served in the morning to the farmer,
together with a glass of coffee. (Made Suambara)
