Delicious Cakes at the Gianyar Market
Gianyar
Regency is not only famous for its local
market offerings of artistic products, but
also the specific food available at the
market, popularly called pasar senggol.
The market is usually so crowded with sellers
and buyers elbowing each other,
that locals have termed it pasar senggol
where the public can easily touch each other,
its that busy.
In
general, the markets start operating late
in the afternoon until midnight, with the
sale of food and drinks only. The most visited
pasar senggol has been in Gianyar,
located in the center of the Regency Capital,
close to the public transport terminal,
and under the management of the authority
of Gianyar Regency, capable of arranging
the market neatly.
As soon as visitors walks through
the markets entrance they see canang
traders, followed by traders of food and
special Balinese cakes. The second row consists
of sellers of food and cakes coming in from
of outside Bali, including rows of traders
selling clothes.
Most visitors are in search of meals special
to Gianyar such as roasted pig, roasted
chicken, and cakes. The cakes on sale here
are not only delicious, but also cheap and
creatively made. In one pack of cakes, there
are nine varied kinds of cakes of different
forms and tastes. The nine different cakes
are in Balinese nomenclature as follows:
Jaja lempog, jaja pisang (banana) lawe,
roasted jaja laklak, steamed jaja kukus,
jaja batun tuki, jaja giling, jaja kulek,
jaja bulung and triangled jaja bucu telu,
also there are eight other kinds of cakes
from other regions. With respect to tri-angled
cakes, these undergo a difficult process
in preparation because of the character
of Gianyars pure origin, but price
is only Rp 1,000.
Apart from visits by locals, Gianyars
Senggol Market Place, invites many visits
by people from Denpasar and some tourists
classified as backpackers who have spent
many vacations in Bali. Interestingly these
visitors also seek to learn more of the
cultural life of the people of this Island
of the Gods. (BTN/031)
