Badung The Center of Tourism

Folk Art Shows to Welcome the Year 2004

To welcome the New Year 2004, the government of Badung Regency will hold a Folk Art Show at Kuta Beach, just in front of Bali Intan Hotel, Legian Kuta. The show constitutes an annual event that has been held since 2001, and performs several traditional shows from throughout the Badung Regency. Although the venue will be the same, the performance’s venue will be divided into two. A Special for Ngelawang Barong and Baleganjur will be performed at the beach. Two performances that require many players will mingle among the crowd, so there is no border between spectators and the dancers. Meanwhile, other performances will be on the permanent stage. .

Drs. I Wayan Suardaniyasa, Art Conservation and Maintenance Section at Badung Regional Office of Culture, said that the kind of performing arts showed each year are always changeable, including the supporting troupe. Existing performing arts, especially those in the Badung Regency remains to survive, and if possible to develop. In addition, it also aims an opportunity to art observers and artists to express their talents and capability in art creativity. “The main purpose is to preserve art and culture as an ancestor’s heritage. So, this event will be expected to support the process of Bali tourism recovery because of several incidents experienced by Bali and Indonesia in general,” he said when visited at his office.
Art performances that involve some 400 artists will not only make traditional performances, but also present modern art groups. The group of creative performances of art in Badung Regency is really small in numbers. But on this occasion, a modern performance will present Cahya Atsuka Entertainment in cooperation with Uma Music Fusion. Last year, the group chaired by Ketut Lanus performed contemporary dances that were supported by dancers that graduated from the Indonesian Academy of Music and Dance (now ISI) Denpasar. At his next performance, he will present a musicalization of poetry. “I’d like to try presenting new art that is rarely performed, whether it is acceptable or not. Yeah, just to measure people’s appreciation,” said Ketut Lanus, a graduate of STSI Denpasar.
He also added, that even though it is called modern art, in its performance it persistently puts priority to the traditional beauty of Bali, just like making a song arrangement accompaniment together with its costumes. To make the atmosphere merrier, musical accompaniment consists of a combination of modern musical instruments and sets of Balinese gamelan, like gangse, kendang, gong, cengceng, and rebab. Sometimes it is combined with other traditional musical instruments, like kendang Sunda, Rebana and Jembe, an African instrument. On the occasion, 25 artists presented 4 songs and a composition of music instrumentals to support the musicalization. “Actually, we just like to entertain, it’s up to the audience to appreciate it,” Lanus added.
As stated by Swardaniyasa, the presentation of many art performances will be free of charge starting at 6 o’clock in the evening until the sunrise of 2004. In the first seconds of the beginning of the New Year 2004, there will be a speech by the Badung deputy regent, and at midnight, local time, a lantern and fireworks display will be lit simultaneously accompanied by a gamelan orchestra to welcome in the New Year.
The New Year’s Eve party will start with a presentation of a Ngelawang Barong procession presented by the Kembang Sari Troupe Petang at Kuta Beach from 18:00-19:30 LT. At the same time, a Banjar Pande Troupe, Mengwi, will perform an energetic and dynamic baleganjur. Then, other planned performances will be presented in succession on the stage including Balinese pop songs by Bali Artist Forum led by Yong Sagita (at 19.30-20.30 LT), the gong kebyar orchestra of Banjar Teguan, Punggul Abiansemal (20.00-20.30 LT), lepas dance by K Tumaritis Studio Bongkasa, Abiansemal (20.30—21.10 LT), Kembang Janger Dance by Banjar Belawan, Abiansemal (21.10-22.00 LT), poetic musicalization by Cahya Atsyuka Entertainment in cooperation with Uma Music Fusion (22.00-22.50 LT), Bondres (22.50-23.45 LT), Baleganjur Creation Dance from Sedang Village, Abiansemal (24.00-24.40 LT), Barong Shio. And at the end all will be cheered up by Balinese pop songs from (24.40-onwards).(BTN/sana)
