Denpasar, In the City

Release the Dawn 2004 at Puputan Badung Park

Each end of the year, Denpasar City Administration perform a spectacular show that involves about a thousands artists. It will happen again on 31 December 2003, when people get entertained from morning until dawn, at Puputan Badung Park.

According to Kadek Suardana, one of the organizer committee members, the purpose of this arts performance is an entertainment contribution to people to release the stress of work and city’s noise. This show is expected to be an artistic event to express their ideas and abilities. “This event will be an artist’s competition arena, however, the other purpose is to minimize traffic accidents in Denpasar that are caused by negative activities of the younger set in celebrating the year change, such as running around drunk on the streets. This situation was recognized last year,” he asserted.
Mr. Suardana said the programe this year will be similar to that staged the previous year. The difference this year is the procession manner of releasing the sun at noon. “The previous year we performed the baleganjur (traditional music orchestra troupe) procession from schools and banjar (sub village), but this year’s celebrations will perform all sorts of arts of Denpasar City, such as Barong dance and Baris dance. The baleganjur will be formatted as a special attraction played on the stage by junior and senior high school students. Seeing the zest from women, we give them an opportunity to show up the newest trends,” he said.
Kadek Suardana said that this event would cost more than Rp.150 million. “Actually, it is difficult for me to choose the kind of arts. From its development in Denpasar, I think that there are no special improvements. That’s why I choose the most interesting and fresh, because from the newer development, modern arts are more dominant, such as musical arts that I prefer to perform,” he explained.
Participants who support this event involves the public especially Denpasar citizens, government institutions and elementary, junior, and senior high schools. Pecalang (traditional guard) of traditional villages in Denpasar, Trantib, City Communication Office, that is coordinated by Poltabes (City Police) Denpasar are ready to secure the procession. “For any rain anticipation, beside providing a closed stage, we also carry out special rites at the temple and use a laser beam to expel the rain,” he said.
