Indonesian domestic flights is colored with the appearance of no-frills companies, which offers a competitive ticket price. Garuda applied this system through City Link with flights to Jakarta, including twice daily flights to Denpasar. Other companies such as Batavia Air, Star Air, Lion Air, Jatayu, etc., snatched away within the major flight line Jakarta and big cities in Indonesia.
Outside the line a number of Indonesia flight companies are trying to extend the flight link abroad especially the South East Asia area.  On Sunday (28/3), Garuda Indonesia opened the new flight line to Singapore from three big cities, Yogyakarta, Padang, and Pekanbaru. According to Communication Director of Garuda Indonesia, Pujobroto at his press conference, the flight Yogyakarta-Singapura will be served three times a week using Boeing B737-300.
“This flight is aimed as an access for foreigners to visit cities in Indonesia,” he said. Besides as a tourism development effort in Central Java, Pujobroto asserted, the opening of flight route Yogyakarta-Singapore is to anticipate the demand request.
Air Asia in Kuala Lumpur also compete for regional markets in South East Asia by opening the new flight route from cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, with flight destinations to Johor Bahru (Malaysia, only few miles from Singapore) starting middle April.
The appearance of Air Asia will tighten the competition between Garuda Indonesia, Air Asia, and Merpati that also fly to cities in Indonesia. Air Asia introduced “The First Compatible Flight of Asia”. For the flight line Jakarta - Johor Bahru for Rp 99,999 or about US$ 12 one way. (BTN/DP)
