Determined Efforts to Deal With Poverty

In making determined efforts to deal with poverty, the regional government is expected to actively take part in a policy that could be used to take out poverty in Indonesia since the labor intensive program is not effective. This was stated by the Advisor of National Planning Board (Bappenas), Bambang Bintoro Sudjito at a Regional Experience Exchange Workshop in Mainstreaming Efforts to Poverty Improvement at Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel Tuesday (3/8).

It was explained, the number of population categorized into poor levels in Indonesia reached 38 million. Yet, as Bambang said, this figure could not be finalized. Bambang hoped, the upcoming new government needed to improve the situation, as without high economic growth it can not be expected to manage and overcome the poverty problem. “Low economic growth will not create job opportunities that is sufficient for accommodating a fresh labor force. This will increase the figure of open unemployment that will be vastly sensitive in expanding the indigent po-pulation.ulation. If this is neglected, will have the potential to provoke social disorder in society. It is excessively dangerous,” he explained.
Bambang said the condition of each region in Indonesia is not the same. Similarly, the poverty rate of population of each region varies, so in determining the target of indigence reduction was required a policy that referred to that regional condition.
At the workshop an experience exchange was held for three days, on the 2-4 August, Bambang expects to be able to find out the best solution to reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia. At the workshop were also invited some parties to share their outstanding achievements, among them were the Regent of Jembrana I Gede Winasa and Regent of Solok Gumawan Fauzi. Some of the solutions were the improvement of social services, efficiency in using goods and extending funds that could give direct benefits to the indigent population. (BTN/015)
