in Traffic Jams on Route to Besakih
If
you pass through Menanga Village around
06.00-07.00 in the morning, crowds are to
and fro on the roadside and many a time
results in traffic jams, caused by a traditional
market on the route to Besakih called Menanga.
Menanga
Market is popular at Rendang Sub district
(West Karangasem). This market is 5 kilometers
from Besakih in a southwards direction.
According to head of the market represented
by Gusti Lanang Putra, goods sold at the
market are agricultural products, fabrics,
consumer goods, fruits, plaited materials,
meat, fish, live chickens and ducks. 80%
of traders who sell at the market, are residents
from around Rendang Sub district. The rest
are from Bangli and Klungkung regencies.
Once in every three days, on Kajeng , (a
day in three-day week base on Balinese almanac),
this traditional market undergoes increasing
activity of selling and buying, because
Kajeng is the market day at Menanga Market.
This market, according to Lanang Putra,
opens from 04.00 up to 10.00am. Early in
the morning, many people selling or buying,
present in great numbers. At 10.00am, all
activity at this market comes to an end.
The crowded hours are 06.00-07.00, so it
frequently causes traffic jams on the road
in front of it.
Every trader is imposed with an operational
charge. Its amount depends on the volume
of goods sold, minimally Rp 300/ticket.
If the traders have a larger volume of goods,
they will be given three to five tickets
at a time, or even charged for 10 tickets
worth Rp 3,000 per day.
Other than traders that take advantage a
veranda, stall or kiosk for selling their
goods are charged land lease once in three
months. Its amount varies, depending on
the location or a place of doing selling.
If they use a veranda as a place to operate,
they will be charged a leasing fee of Rp
3,000 every 3 months. If they use a kiosk
they pay Rp 27,000 every 3 months. While,
to keep the market clean four cleaning service
staff are utilized.
