Badung The Center of Tourism

SJB Icaswara Kanti
To Be Staged Abroad

There are so many women sekaa gong, but this group mostly consisting of Public Servants composed Sekaa Joged Bumbung, an association dance in Bali. Joged Bumbung is usually danced by a dynamic and nimble girl by entangling male dancer to be invited to dance (ngibing). As an accompaniment, its uses traditional music instruments made from bamboo
This corps of woman instrumentalists is called Sekaa Joged Bumbung Icaswara Kanti. This traditional artistry group is supported by 17 women personnel at Banjar Gede, Sempidi Village, Mengwi Sub district, Badung, which was formed in 2000, and started staging in 2001.
According to Ni Nyoman Nanik Kormaniati, penabuh (instrument player) and joged dancer as well, in each staging of penabuh they dance in rotation according to the audience’s request. “If staging, we usually chose a highlight event, such as an anniversary, reception and most often we conduct it as an amusement for the tourist,” said Korma.
Ni Ketut Sediani told us that this sekaa is often staged in hotels and restaurants in Kuta, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran and Sanur, with a permanent schedule of 4 times a week. “The hotel asks for an every day staging, but because of the workload, we perform them 4 times in one week,” she said.
This sekaa jogged Bumbung by I Wayan Sedia is often brings the artistry mission abroad, at guest’s own request, or sometime becomes an ambassador of the Badung Regency. They have visited America, China, France, Bulgaria, Hungarian, Czechoslovakia and Korea. “Hopefully, in 2005 we plan to visit Australia with the Badung Administrative Department,” she added.
What a great traditional artistic hobby! Besides elaborating the music of the gamelan joged bumbung, this mother’s group is also capable in playing the gamelan gender (puppet’s musical instrument). This castanet is often played at Hindu ceremonies and custom rites in Bali. Moreover, the sekaa is often staged for puppet playing up to Tabanan, Denpasar, Gianyar and Klungkung, whilst the miniature shape of the gamelan gong kebyar is only played in hotels. “Gamelan gong kebyar is less ordered, and mostly sold is joged bumbung,” said I Wayan Sedia, the owner as well as the builder of the Icaswara Kanti Studio.
In realty, the idea of forming Sekaa Joged Icaswara Kanti has developed because of tourism influence. The story is; Ni Nyoman Agustini (26) and Ni Ketut Sediani (21) often play the gamelan rindik (name of gamelan in Joged Bumbung) and gender wayang, which is also often at ngayah (charity staging) at the temple. Moreover, they are often involved at important events by the Badung Administrative Office.
