Drug
Bust a Concern to Average Tourist
The
current situation where it is alleged that
drugs are being placed unknowingly in tourists
luggage has led to many tourists shrink-wrapping
luggage in plastic.
Many arriving at Ngurah Rai International
Airport now have luggage totally incased
in plastic with only the handle protruding.
The practice has began since an Australian
woman was found to have more than four kilograms
of marijuana in her unlocked body surf board
bag of which she has denied all knowledge.
The practice is bound to become more widespread
with the worldwide terrorism alerts and
tough international penalties for drug finds.
With more and more drug mule
busts thought a higher degree of intelligence
sharing between nations, drug distributions
seek more effective and lower risks in moving
drugs and will look more to innocent, unwitting
tourists. Completely sealing baggage in
plastic is cheap and to a degree effective
which offers the tourist peace of mind. The
practice is not only for passengers traveling
to Bali, but also to other destinations
throughout Asia.
In the future it could become mandatory
for tourists traveling to certain destinations,
which may be a demand from insurance companies,
which are landed with high legal costs.
