Joged Pingit of Pengosekan Ubud

Joged Bumbung is a most popular stage show. Why it’s named joged bumbung, is because the accompanying music is made from bumbung (bamboo bar). Joged Bumbung not only attracts the youngster, but as well as parents, even elders come to watch this dance on stage.

The audience of Joged Bumbung do not only show appreciation of the grace of the dancer which are mostly cuties, but they can join in the dance conducted by Pekak (means grandpa in Balinese term) Gogoalah, a grandfather from Banjar Pengosekan. He is always there whenever joged bumbung is staged. “ Tiyang Demen ngibing (I’d love to dance with),” this is the grandfather’s word.
The other dance is Joged Pingit. This Dance is rare. Joged Pingit existed in Banjar Pengosekan, Mas Village, Ubud Subdistrict. Wayan Keted, pemangku (Holy Man) of Taman Limut Temple tells that he has no idea about the provenance of Joged Pingit. He only knows that in the temple where he undertakes, there is a gelungan (crown) of joged. For this crown of jogged omission, pemangku, prajuru and also some temple’s figures are trying to look for the dancer. Some girls were collected and taught to dance the joged. Among so many dancers, only one is capable to master this dance
Ni Wayan Lati, the name of the chosen girl, is able to dance with the crown. Surprisingly, when her head touches the crown, she feels there is dissimilar strength entering her. We don’t know what causes her to be able to dance friskily. She is also able to perform other dances that she has never trained for. Now, Lati has become the grandmother of 10 grandchildren.
While Pekak Widia, which previously was one of penabuh (joged instrumentalist) exclaimed “ I have no idea, how Lati can dance so nimbly and friskily jump on the chair and also lightly turn her body.” This dance is recognized as joged pingit
Why it’s named Joged Pingit, is because only a special person can perform it. Furthermore, the dance is becoming popular with the public. It always absorbs a lot of the audience wherever this dance is staged. “On that occaision, I always earn lots of money in essence,” said Lati while trying to remember her past.
Besides staging, this jogged group also accepts private jobs. The customer are generally farmers who have had a successful harvest. Wayan Liyer, an onion farmer of Banjar Lod Tunduh for example. He hired a joged dance, because his onion crop was successful and the same thing was also conducted by Pekak Warsa the origin of Pengosekan, because his paddy crop was successful.
In the1960’s, when Lati was married, this joged was never staged and the name of Joged Pingit started to become forgotten.. But, in the last 2 years, Nyoman Warsa, the instrumentalist from Banjar Pengosekan, started activating the Joged Pingit dance again. He makes the gambelan gandrung to accompany the dance. “I wish to awaken this sacred dance,” he said
He remembers exactly the glorious moment of Joged Pingit, at that time, he was still a child, but he knew some songs ( gamelan) accompanying the dance. That song is still recorded in his marrow. One staged last year, this dance is now starting to be staged again.
