“Odalan”, A Balinese Hindu Ritual
Procession to be Staged

DENPASAR—I Nyoman Cerita, a lecturer of ISI (Indonesian Institute of Arts) Denpasar staged the customary ritual Balinese Hindu procession (temple festival) in Bali taking place at Natya Mandala Hall of ISI Denpasar on Wednesday (10/11). The new composition was supported by 25 artists from Cudamani Studio Pengosekan, Ubud and was prepared in relation to his postgraduate examination at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States in the upcoming May 2005. According to Cerita, except for being performed on his examination, the composition that has a duration of 2 hours will also be performed in a number of big cities in the US for two months. DENPASAR – Hotel Public Relations ( PR), as back bone of hotel promotion and even Bali tourism were tested for their abilities at the Long Hall Cultural Park, Denpasar, Monday ( 22 / 11). Each competitor was served by questions about Balinese culture the hotel’s correlation with society, work atmosphere (relation) with immeasurable differences in religion and beliefs, ways of promoting tourism, etc. Every PR received separate questions. The 8 PR examinees who participated in the knowledge test were Julita Chandra (Nusa Dua Beach Hotel), Agustini Witari (White Rose Hotel), Ni Made Indah Melindasari (Bali of Dynasty Resort), Cok Istri Indratri (Alam Kulkul Resort), Marianne FB (Kuta Paradiso Hotel), Dewi Karmawan (Hard Rock Hotel), Evy Suryaningsih ( Melia Bali Villas & Spa) and Prami Pratiwi ( The Ritz-Carlton Bali).

Commemorating Puputan Margarana

TABANAN - Commemorating the 58th Puputan Margarana was conducted by a flag ceremony and flower scattering at the National Monument of Taman Pujaan Bangsa (TPB) Margarana, Saturday (20 /11). At the same time, the stride procession of mepeed was also conducted by women carrying the gebogan fruit (fruit arrangement), adolescents in various “pengawin” ceremonial utensils and the march line of gong bleganjur This year’s ceremonial event was attended by Bali Governor, Dewa Beratha, Chief of Bali Provincial Police, Police Inspector General Mangku Pastika and also the regents and City Mayor’s from all over Bali. Attending also were a number of Japanese citizens, which form the group Nippon Bali Kai. “We participate within the commemoration of Puputan Margarana each year to remember our Ancestors who passed away as the team of Ciung Wenara lead by I Gusti Ngurah Rai in the fight against the NICA (Dutch colonialists),” said one Japanese Citizen.

AIDS Commemoration Day, Presenting a Dance4Life

DENPASAR - Commemorating world AIDS day, a show entitled Dance4Life was held at the Monument of Struggle of Balinese People Bajra Sandhi Renon, Denpasar, Friday (27/11). Though in heavy rain, this event was attended by thousands of visitors. Attending was the Vice Governor of Bali Alit Kalan, and artists Nurul Arifin, Conie Contantia, Donny Kusuma, Nugie, Oka, Sova Band, Oppie Andaresta, DJ. Achdyat, Devil Dice,Telephone, and Pandawa Band. According to Mercya Susanto, world AIDS day was commemorated at a same time in three different continents Africa, Europe and Asia. For Asia, it was held in Bali. “This is the first ever commemoration of World AIDS day in Bali,” she asserted.
