THK
Commendation on Space Division
In
my previous 4th edition article I cited
one invisible way concerning harmony and
balance relationships in Bali signaled within
Tri Hita Karana concepts (THK) this is through
cultural arrangement development which contains
three essential parts that are related with
the concept of luan-teben (sacral-profane).
The
three traditional Balinese space divisions
are namely tri mandala; tri (three) and
mandala (zone/area). Tri mandala means three
zonal divisions, which are utama mandala
(most sacred zone or in Balinese term called
jeroan) as the worshipping site; madya mandala
(the middle/center zone or jaba tengah)
for hall building; nista mandala (the most
profane outer zone or it called jaba sisi,
teba, lebuh or telajakan).
These three zonal areas of tri mandala concept
are classified again into the nine zones
namely sanga mandala ( sanga = nine, mandala
= zone). Within the space division of traditional
village in Bali, tri mandala and sanga mandala
were inflected into the sacred zone /worshipping
site; settlement zone or society union;
and activity zone.
Within micro scope, for example, the hotel
area, as the parhyangan aspect is the element
of atman/soul or human revitalized tonic
(hotel management, costumer, supplier, competitor),
which come from God/Paramatman, and lays
on a worshipping site around the hotels
area. So, parhyangan is not a sacred physical
construction, but atman that comes from
Paramatman and lies at a worshipping site.
Pawongan is the hotel management human element
(owner, management, and employee), costumer,
supplier, and competitor not the
hotels building. The palemahan aspect
is elements of sarira, which is directed
to all hotel zone (land, construction, plants,
animals, other physical media and equipments.
Space division and arrangement, or hotels
territory, for example, refers to the concept
of sanga mandala signals that 1/9 (one per
nine) for sacred zone (SZ); 5/9 (five per
nine) for occupied zone/construction zone
(OZ); and the rest 3/9 (three per nine)
for open-green space (OGS).
This zonal division based on tri mandala
and sanga mandala are horizontally characterized,
whilst the vertical one using the rule of
tri angga (tri = three, angga = part). Utamaning
angga (the upper/most sacred part); madyaning
angga (middling part); nistaning angga (most
profane/under zone). If assumed as a human
body, the head is utamaning angga, the body
is madyaning angga, and the foot is nistaning
anggga.
This vertical space division was seemly
to anticipate the storied building by putting
the sacred zone on the upper part; the occupied
zone in the center; and the activity zone
at the lower space. Thus, whether tri mandala
and sanga mandala, moreover tri angga are
the motivating mediums to create harmonic
relationships between humans and God, among
human beings, human and nature as stated
within the THK concept.
