Edible
Skin of Sentul
Here
is a local and rare fruit that resembles
a mangosteen. The Balinese call it sentul
(Sandoricum indicum). If the flesh of mangosteen
is sweet, this one is on the contrary, sour.
So, how can people enjoy this fruit? People
prefer to use it for rujak (mixed with sweet
sour sauce) by taking its skin instead of
its sour flesh and may discard the flesh.
The skin is not as sour as the flesh.
This fruit is also used as ingredients for
common offering before its position was
taken over by imported fruits. However,
at the moment, there are certain kinds of
offerings that still needs sour fruit like
cepala namely offering on the paddys
ritual in the rice field before it turns
yellow. So, sentul can be taken advantage
to fulfill this need.
Sentul can grow well in lowlands. Its tree
can reach fifteen meters high and has a
straight trunk with rare branches. When
young, the fruit colors light green and
when ripe it turns dark yellow.(BTN/Punia)
