Offerings
and Drinks to Take Home
If
you happen to see the Balinese putting offerings
on the ground and sprinkling liquid from
bottles on your island trip it must be arrack
and brem. Here, brem is used as tabuh, a
complement of the offerings presentation.
Brem is local drink obtained from fermented
rice. Rice that is good for making brem
is white (ketan) and black sticky rice (injin).
On celebrating Galungan festivity, the Balinese
usually make fermented rice for ingredients
of offerings. Then it is furnished a by-product
that is called brem. It tastes very sweet
and could be more complete when added with
an ice cube, this drink will quench the
thirst. I had a memorable experience when
one day, I, with some other reservation
teams carried out a hotel inspection in
the heart of Ubud. The hotel provided us
with a distinctive brem welcome drink. It
seemed like closer to the local
tradition and the taste.
Nowadays, visitors cannot only taste the
drink during the stay in Bali but also can
bring it home a souvenir. This brem has
been produced in a modern process, attractive
packaging and branding.
