Tabanan,
Rainbow over Ricefields
Tektekan
from the Rice Granary County
The busyness to welcome the 27th Bali
Arts Festival (BAF) is obviously seen at
Tabanan Regency. Region that is renowned
as the rice granary presents Tektekan
as typical art staged by Puspa Wangi troupe
from Tegal Temu Kaja hamlet, Kerambitan
as contingent of Tabanan. Pursuant to the
agenda, the troupe that supported by 75
dancers and gamelan players will make its
show at 20:00 Local Time at Wantilan Hall
of Taman Hamlet Abiansemal, Badung on the
forthcoming Tuesday 28 June.
According to I Made Suarya (51), Chief of
Puspa Wangi troupe, his party would perform
the storyline on Calonarang in the episode
Katundung Ratna Mangali. Through
the dynamics of kulkul (bamboo bell) sounds,
the horribleness of rangda dance and courageousness
of the dancers to do ngunying (stab themselves
with pointed kris), Suarya expected to be
able to attract the applause of spectators.
Wherever we make a show, either at
temple courtyard or on the celebration of
Indonesian Independence Day, Bali Arts Festival
or at hotels this troupe surely show off
its trance action. Our dancers
perform ngunying or ngurek again and again
without injury and blood, he said.
Suarya said that its troupe remained to
dance the sacred Barong and Rangda through
complete ritual procession. Both Barong
and Rangda are duwe pura (property
of temple) that dwelt in special shrine
at Tumbal Temple, Tegal Temu Kaja hamlet.
To jazz up the ambience, apart from
presenting kulkul instrument we also employ
other instruments like 2 drums, tawa-tawa,
kecek, gong gede, kemong and 5 flutes,
he said.
Indeed, Tektekan that was originally a folk
art of which instruments are dominated by
kulkul often performed at rural areas. Nowadays,
this art is capable of penetrating other
areas that categorized into special and
exclusive class. Almost every night, this
troupe makes a performance in Nusa Dua,
Jimbaran, Kuta, Sanur, Ubud and Taman Ayun
Temple, Mengwi. (BTN/015)
