Exhibition Supena, Susena and Eleven Sculptors
For
some time now Denpasar City often appears
the exhibition arena for painters and carvers.
However, the location is only on sites such
as the Bali Museum (Mayor Wisnu Street),
Museum Sidik Jari and Danes Art Veranda
(Hayam Wuruk Street) and few restaurants
and hotels in Sanur, but these activities
are able to promote Denpasar as the city
of culture (Hindu).
At
Danes Art Veranda, 3 13 July, an
exhibition took place entitled Supenas
Nature Genealogy Study, the masterpiece
of I Made Supena (35). Supena started his
art career as a Balinese traditional carver.
Now, he is famed with an abstract expressionism
style. Within this exhibition, Supena presents
various works in forms of sketches, drawings,
paintings and installation works.
Through this exhibition, he tells about
his career path firstly as a painter in
the Balinese Traditional style, shape drawing,
and then sketch making, and painting is
his current style. Supenas progression
indicates with good mark, his unemotional
painting line lately changed more strongly
and expressively.
Whilst in Pala Restaurant (By Pass Ngurah
Rai), Sanur, another exhibition took place
entitled Panoramic Abstractions
by the painter I Made Supena and Ketut Susena.
Both these young painters present scenery
paintings in their own style.
Similarity both painters still using scenery
as the object and then abstracted to their
own appetite style. Supena only catches
natures spirit, and Susena not just
catches natures spirit but as is well
transformed through taunt color playing.
This exhibition will run until 31 August.
In Griya Santrian Gallery, Sanur, from 1
July - 13 August, a sculpture exhibition
entitled 2 Titik Api will present
sculpture works of 20 sculptors from Java
and Bali, along with their best styles.

Endless Probe
a la Yung Min
Yung
Min (51) is a newcomer in the painting bourse
in Bali. Categorized into new because he
exhibited his paintings recently at public
places. Located at Bali Museum, Jalan Mayor
Wisnu, Denpasar (26 June-10 July) Yung Ming
displayed 40 paintings that he has made
during the period 1976-2005. His exhibition
took the theme Endless Probe
that described the creativity of Yung Min
as a painter in the course of nearly 30
years.
Yung Min was born in Tabanan, 6 June 1954.
Since his childhood, he was interested in
the art of painting. At that time, he often
made visits to the house of the late Kay
IT, a painter who was somewhat renowned
in his time. On the visit, he looked attentively
at how Kay IT painted and this experience
then accumulated into his subconscious mind.
Indeed, he has a hobby in painting from
his childhood. This hobby was impeded, as
he had to work to earn a living for his
family.
Having graduated from senior high school
(1972), Yung Min commenced to paint on canvas
with oil paints. Experience during his childhood
then appeared into the surface and had an
effect on his works. Such influences can
only be observed on the technique he painted
and the way to capture the object of painting,
while the character of Yung Min remained
to emerge as his identity. This is seen
in the painting entitled Bamboo Flute Player
(1976) and Temple (1980).
Friendship with several painters also has
an effect on his works. His admiration of
the works of other painters becomes a resource
of learning and inspiration. As seen in
some of his works, remind us of that of
Wianta. This may happen due to his appreciation
to the painter Wianta. However, the painting
of Yung Min persistently reflects his decorative-naïve
character. This can be observed in the painting
entitled Cili (2002).
Of the 40 paintings of Yung Min his first
exhibition expressed his wanderings in the
world of painting for 30 years (1976-2005).
As seen in his exhibition, too, he presented
several styles, starting from abstract,
semi-abstract, cubism and decorative. What
a tiring long passage, however, in his painting
he always expresses his unrivalled happiness.
Colors of his painting are bright, primary
colors intermingle that arise contrast,
but under brushing of Yung Min, it looks
harmonious.
The exhibition certainly can be made a stepping
stone for Yung Min to prepare the upcoming
steps. At least, he must determine his attitude
in expressing the emotion of art to canvas
space. However, the first step has been
swung and we wait for the next step. What
do you think, Yung Min? (BTN/Gung Man)
