Surfing
in Kuta Carnival 2005
Kutas
waves for tens of years has become a special
attraction that tied thousands of abroad
surfers, lifting up the tourism industry
and creating Kutas self-lifestyle,
and had made Kuta become special rather
than other tourism objects in Bali.
Presently, surfing is still sticks with
Kutas image. So, no wonder when the
first Kuta Carnival took place in 2003,
the surfer community put at priority to
this event. For more than a week, surfing
competitions held at Kuta Beach and Uluwatu
Beach, which involving thousands of local
and abroad surfer attracted big audiences.
Just like Kuta Carnival III (2005), this
sport has become the foremost show. Every
day, for about 9 day (25 June 3 July),
surfing is able to absorb thousands audiences
and participants.
This year surfing competition will be followed
by various ages, starting from adults to
middle age. There are several types of surfing
competition with all specialties that will
be held such as Kuta Lines Open,
Rip Curl Grommet, MOD
Om Bali Pro Legend & Retro, Surfer
Girl Ladies and Bodyboard, Reef
& Surfer Girl Open (6 stars),
Quick Air Show and Billabong
Teams Challenge.
For example, MOD, OM Bali Pro Legend
& Retro competition, this event
will start in the morning from 7 am until
5 pm. This event reminds the history that
is Bali as a worlds surfing paradise.
Legendaries surfers (between 1970s
and 1980s) will compete at Uluwatu
Beach, Monday (27/6). This beach contains
the history as the venue of the first International
Surfing Competition in Indonesia in
1980s, which is OM Bali Pro.
All the legendaries surfers 70s and
80s come from Australia, like Peter
McCabe, who was introduced to the beautiful
waves of Bali especially at Uluwatu Beach
to the world through his starring surfing
movies. Another legend is Terry Richardson,
the first champion of Om Bali Pro in 1980s,
Andrew McKinnon, the long board world champion
World Title Championship in
1987, Mitchell Ray and Terry Fitzgerald.
Balinese legendary surfers will also participate
within this event.
The champion of MOD OM Bali Pro Legend &
Retro for Grand Master level
is Danny Godwin (1st winner), Ketut Priksa
(2nd winner), Mitchel Rae (3rd winner) and
Thornton Fallander (4th winner). For Master
level, the first winner is Ketut Pitur,
Martin Kalajzich (2nd winner), Made Sena
(3rd winner) and Nyoman Sudiarta (4th winner),
whilst for Retro level champions
are Made Lana (1st winner), Made Lapur (2nd
winner), Ketut Pitur (3rd winner) and Wirtawan
