Royal Costume to be Part of Singaraja City

Payas agung ningrat (grand royal costume)
of Buleleng that is almost no longer in
existence is set in motion to be re-introduced.
In the past times, it might only be worn
on wedding ceremonies by members of the
royal family that married to another from
the same rank. If the marriage occurred
between the members of royal family to one
of non-royal family, they were not allowed
to put on this costume. However, it may

of Art and Cultural Preservers (IPSBI) of
Buleleng Chapter, Karnadhi A. Parwatha Panji
from Kanginan Grand Palace of Buleleng,
said it to Bali Travel News not long ago.
 It
is the injunction that only permitted the
royal descendants to wear such costume constituted
the major cause of the extinction of Buleleng
grand costume since lately, member of royal
family rarely married to another of the
same royal family.
For that reason, Karmadhi said, such grand
costume commences to be re-introduced and
everyone now may wear it. Surely, he or
she must comply with simple requirements
like it’s merely worn on wedding ceremonies,
mepandes (tooth filing) and menek kelih
(rite of transition). Another condition,
it must be worn completely and it’s
not exchangeable or not reducible.
When exchanged, it can make a different
significance. Karnadhi said that the grand
costume of Buleleng has established since
the reign of I Gusti Ngurah Ketut Jelantik,
the King of Buleleng who was exiled to Padang,
West Sumatera. Then, such costume continually
flourished promptly. Today, this grand costume
has widely used by both members of royal
family and other wider public in accordance
with the conditions specified. Even, this
costume attracted some students to execute
a research on it and favoured by foreign
tourists so this is capable of becoming
an attraction and as part of the Singaraja
