Water
of Taman Jayaprana Temple to Cure Several
Illnesses
At Kalianget Village, some 90 km west
of Singaraja lays a temple called Jayaprana
Temple. Its location is some 2 km turning
to the left (south) from the road of Singaraja-Seririt.
Kalianget Village is previously known as
a village that produced a story of a couple,
Jayaprana and Layonsari. Their love story
is similar to that of Shakespeares
Romeo and Juliet.
Jayaprana is a servant of royalty who then
marries to a charming girl named Layonsari.
On account of her beauty, the king who has
forced Jayaprana to marry her soon, comes
to crazy about her and intends to marry
her, too. A line of action is then planned
to separate Jayaprana from Layonsari through
vicious tactics.
It is mentioned, western territory of Kalianget
Kingdom is attacked by an enemy. The king
then delegates Jayaprana and his chief minister
Sawunggaling to resist the attack. They
both depart by passing through a dense shrub
and forest. However, prior to leave for
battle field Jayaprana makes his time to
deliver an alluring flower with the message:
if the flower turns wilted, it indicates
that he is killed.
On arriving at the destination, Jayaprana
is astonished. He finds no enemy at all.
When Jayaprana conveys his astonishment
to Sawunggaling, the latter even laughs
boisterously. Hi, Jayaprana!
Sawunggaling yells thunderously, as
a matter of fact, our coming here is not
to fight against the enemies, but the king
assigned me to murder you.
Hearing such response, Jayaprana falls faint.
The king want your beloved wife, Layonsari,
adds Sawunggaling. As he feels indebted
to the king, he ultimately gives up himself
to be killed.
In the meantime, Layonsari who is in her
period of waiting for the arrival of her
husband at home, suddenly startled by the
coming of the king. Without being ashamed,
the king without delay persuades her. Still,
she refuses him politely. The king loses
his temper and would like to rape her. Seeing
this, Layonsari is also furious moreover
when she knows the flower given by his husband
has been wilted. At a glance, she grabs
the kris dagger affixed on the back of the
king and then she stabs her chest until
she is dead. According to local community
nearby, the temple constitutes the abode
of ancestral soul of Jayaprana. It is situated
on the street side of the village and equipped
with Taman (park) Temple, few meters behind
the building of main temple. There are two
Taman Temples, namely one is intended for
womens bathing place and another for
mens. Its water springs freshly from
the ground.
Local inhabitants believe that water at
Taman Temple possesses healing efficacy.
According to Nyoman Sukaraja (46), to cure
dermatitis as smallpox, one is sufficient
to put offerings and take a bath in the
small pool there. Few days later, he will
recover.
Putu Wija has different story. Those who
come here are not only from Kalianget Village.
Many of them are from villages across Bali.
Even, there was once a seriously mentally
ill visitor who got his recovery after bathing
there. Believe it or not, that man comes
again in normal condition, he remarked
seriously.
Taman Temple is surrounded by vast spread
of rice field. Bijou river with its crystal
clear water flows there. In the afternoon,
this place is visited by flock of people.
Some merely bathe, however some others take
the water with jerrycan for consumption
as drinking water. They believe that water
in the Taman Temple has healing power. Its
water is fresh and makes the body healthier,
said Made Kerta Negara from Joanyar Village,
the adjacent village to Kalianget. (BTN/Gung
