”Alive” Museum in Ubud

Among the five museums in Ubud, Arma Museum is in fact the most popular in the community and never lacks activities. Therefore dreams of Agung Rai, owner of the museum, makes it an alive museum come true. “With the exclusion of displaying paintings that have high artistic value, the museum constitutes a venue of learning for whoever would like to know more about Balinese art and culture. We open the class of painting, sculpturing, playing gamelan, dancing, making oblations, cooking, yoga and meditation. Assuredly, it is led by instructors who have been competent in their own domain,” said Agung Asrama, Manager of Arma Museum.

When Bali Travel News paid a visit to this museum, many girls were swaying their bodies while they were attentively listening to the instruction of the instructor, who was also a woman. From the location where the girls danced, Bali Travel News could discern tens of boys who were imitating the gesture of baris (warrior) dance that demonstrated by the instructor. “Currently, Arma has 80 children of elementary level consisting of 30 boys and 50 girls. There are 60 other children who have accomplished advanced and creation level,” said Agung Asrama while adding that participants of advanced and creation level have mastered some dances and made frequent performance. However, they do not practice as frequently as that of the elementary level.
They just do exercise before making a presentation. It is caused by the fact that most of them have been in secondary and senior high school. “They assuredly put priority on their activity at school,” explained Nyoman Suastini, a dance instructor at Arma Museum.
Elementary level does exercise every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. At this level, the participants are taught about the basic of dance like how to make a look, move the feet aside with a little lifting, right and left gesture, ladle up and so on. When participants have mastered this basic, then some dances will be introduced to them. First thing first is Pendet dance. Meanwhile, course of the elementary level here usually takes place for 6 months.
After six-month exercise, an exam will usually be held for level promotion. Those who pass the exam will be introduced to Legong Dance and some creation dances like Cendrawasih, Manukrawa, Wiranatha, Tenun, Kebyar et cetera. Participants that have been competent to dance one of those dances will be offered an opportunity to exhibit their capacity on a devotional service at several temples available around Ubud. And, those that have done this service and been considered proficient by the instructor would be staged on Saturdays at open stage of Arma Museum.
Dance instructors of Arma Museum indeed have a prowess in their domain. It is this matter that inflicts the parents of children around Ubud prefer to send their children to learn at Arma Museum. In truth, the museum does not merely teach the children from Bali, whoever including you, may join the dance exercise provided you are willing to. (BTN/Made Suambara)
