Seaweed
at Serangan Island, Just Like Green Carpet
Serangan
Island that has been for so long known as
Turtle Island, in fact, also retains a new
attraction to discern. It's seaweed cultivation.
Local farmers are now having new walk of
life from this temptingbusiness of marine
plant. Situated right close to the canal
of Benoa Harbour and along the southern
beach of the island, the spreading green
seaweed just looks like underwater green
carpet. Each stem of the seaweed is tightened
on a string and a collection of string is
then tightened as well at other strings
the right and left fringes. From a distance,
there is something like contours that separate
them one another. Such view will be discernible
obviously when the tide is down or the water
only knee-deep.
This is really a new view. To such kind
appealing farming activity, visitors are
no more necessarily going to Sawangan or
Lembongan Island. It's enough to drop in
at this location as it is situated within
your easy reach, almost in the centre of
golden triangle, Sanur, Kuta and Nusa Dua.
For several decades, seaweed has become
the mainstay export commodity of Bali Province.
It is said that such seaweed can be made
into various beauty product, food and the
like. According to one of local farmers,
the seaweed he planted belonging to Philippine
variety. In terms of its texture, this one
is slightly larger than that of common sargassum.
Uniquely, compared to other kinds of farming
commodities, this seaweed farming is an
immensely attractive for local farmers as
it could be harvested within 28 days.

Tourists
vs Employees
SANUR-At
the end of 2005 there was a tempting spectacle
at Hotel Mentari Sanur. Tourists that stayed
at the hotel came into contest facing the
hotel employees. They got involved in tug
of war. The activity was held in relation
with the fifth anniversary of Hotel Mentari
Sanur. In-house guests were invited to jazz
up the celebration activity. Other than
tug of war, there were also some other activities
along with attractive door prizes. "The
celebration is also marked with the cake
cutting and dinner party with whole family
of Hotel Mentari Sanur," said Elok
F. Hanifah, Sales and Marketing Manager
of the hotel. Seen on the picture some foreign
guests engaged in showing off their capacity
in tug of war. (BTN/013)
