Typical ‘‘Klepon’’ Cake of Bangli Sweet and Sticky


People, who are not familiar with this Balinese distinctive cake, can be slightly annoyed or it even may cause inconvenience. Its name is klepon and its size is small, somewhat larger than marbles. This cake is made from the mixture of white sticky rice flour, palm sugar and enriched with vanilla flavour, natural colouring agent taken from the extract of suji leaf and a small amount of lime for chewing with betel leaf.


All ingredients mentioned above are stirred into batter that later on is pressed again and again till it’s getting rubbery. Then, make small balls and perforated them by using a finger. Add some sugar sauce into it and then boil them. When cooked, take them out and the klepon cakes are ready to be served.
The klepon cake is even more delicious if it is accompanied by grated coconut. To taste this cake, bite first its tip. Be careful that the sugar sauce inside will not defile your hand or splashes others around you.
In many cases, the sugar sauce inside may affect people to sneeze or make the shirt dirty if she or he does not watch out. Nevertheless, this cake remains a favourite food to Balinese people. At wedding parties or reception events, this "klepon" cake is always presented. But also in religious ceremonies in Bali, klepon – cake is frequently served.
In a wedding party, klepon – cake also comes in one of the presents from the bridegroom’s family to that of the bride, in the procession of wedding ceremony called mejauman.
The klepon cakes is now so popular in Bangli, that it is not only sold at traditional market but also served at hotels. Klepon-cake is now the favorite snack of domestic and foreign tourists.
Ms. Ni Wayan Sarni is a dweller living at Jalan Serma Meranggi, Bangli who initiated her home industry to make klepon since tens of years ago. According to her, she has now many orders from restaurants and catering companies. Considering the fact that klepon can only last for one day, it must be ordered on a daily base, to make sure that they are fresh and delicious. Have a nice bite of the klepon - cake of Bangli.
