Ubud
Writers & Readers Festival
By
carrying the theme ‘Desa, Kala,
Patra’, the Ubud Writers & Festivals
was carried out afresh this year. Desa,
Kala, Patra (Time-Place-Identity), a principle
of Balinese Hindu was born from this 2006
festival where issues of place, ancestry
and identity constantly arose. In addition,
a lot of writers participated in this
festival and exposed Bali in the subject
of their writings," said Janet De
Neefe, Director of this festival.
Added, this festival had an objective
to set the wounds to rights after Bali
was jiggled by bombs of the terrorists.
This festival conferred the issues more
than just about the writers, their works
and books. It aimed at employing the strength
of writings in rehabilitating and fortifying
the spirit of Balinese inhabitants as
well as taking visitors back to the Island
of Bali.
Similarly, this festival would bring together
the writers, readers, workers and art
observers both from the Southeast Asia
and Western world to enhance the understanding
between Oriental and Western culture through
several information and ideas.
Approximately 100 writers and journalists,
either from homeland of overseas took
part in this annual event. "We immensely
get touched due to the spirit of the writers
and literary community. We are confident
that the cultural diversity could be coalesced
through literature and have been given
earnest support by the writers, artists
or other Indonesian and international
community," observed Janet who is
also a writer.
A number of activities came into being
during four days (30/9-3/10), like discussion
on literature, book launching, book reading
in two languages, art and cultural excursion
as well as various art presentations.
Activity that was no less attractive was
the creativity by children such as fairy
tale reading and other educative programs.
