Bangli,
Peace and Harmony
Order
of Jesus Effigy
Amongst
the circle of Christian devotees in Bali,
sculptor I Ketut Wira, is widely known.
This sculptor from Selat Tengah Hamlet,
Susut Village, Bangli regency has frequently
made orders of the Jesus Christ effigy for
tens of years. Other than effigies, he also
makes panels inspired by Christian teaching.
Though he is a Hindu follower, he finds
no difficulties in expressing the idea on
every single work of his sculpture. However,
he many times asks for suggestions and consideration
as well as consultancy to the order giver,
so that the effigy is not in contrast to
the ethic and etiquette. With general specialization
and sculpture of typical Balinese style,
the works of Ketut Wira are repeatedly included
in the prestigious exhibitions by the Office
of Industrial and Commercial Affairs of
Bangli Regency.
On being asked about where he obtains the
inspiration of such Christian effigies,
this simple sculptor says that he gets it
from the order giver. Formerly, he made
sculptures of Balinese style as what others
did at his home village. Due to his accuracy,
diligence and patience in analysing the
instruction of consumer he could comprehend
entirely the works in conformity with the
demand of the order givers. "In most
cases, they give me the image requested
in the form of photo or poster," he
observes.
As a general rule, the Jesus effigy or panel
is made from teakwood. Its size varies.
There is one of which height reaching 60
cm, while in the form of panel measures
1.5 m x 1 m.
An
interesting point to ponder from this sculptor
I Ketut Wira, is his sincerity to respect
the faith of others and capability of understanding
the needs of others, even though he does
not keep up with its philosophy well. Similarly,
he wishes that particularly the circle of
Christian community will accept his works.
"Presumably, there is something less
appropriate, but it’s assuredly done
unintentionally," he says frankly.
