Nyoman
Mudita At the Beginning there was Love
For
some people love and career are very likely
hard to combine. However, it does not prevail
over Nyoman Mudita. This man who has a silver
jewelry showroom on Jalan Kapten Agung,
Denpasar admits that his business in which
he is deeply involved at this time, originated
from his profound affection to his wife.
“When I was in secondary school I
fell in love with a girl who is now my wife.
Accidentally, the family of my girlfriend
is a silversmith from Celuk, Sukawati and
from that point onward I saw an excellent
opportunity considering that the demand
of this handicraft was tempting,”
he tells Bali Travel News.
Mudita confesses that his silverwork was
initiated from being a selling agent and
in keeping with the passage of time he could
start producing by himself. “When
I was 17 I have summoned my courage to take
part in an exhibition at Art Centre though
they were not my products. Seeing the fact
that the enthusiasm of the market was so
captivating then, it made me get encouraged,”
he reveals.
Having got married, this mustached man together
with his wife ultimately decided to focus
in this silverwork business as their livelihood.
“The year 1986 was the golden period
of this business, even I was unable to meet
the market demand as there were still a
small number of craftsmen who were willing
to receive orders,” he explains.
In undertaking his art creativity, Mudita
reveals that he is influenced by two conditions,
namely the physical and mental ones. “The
most momentous element in making a work
of art is, in my mind, highly determined
by physical capability and inner spirit
called taksu.”
Added, though one has a high capability
if he does not have any taksu his work will
consequently have no value of taste. “As
a matter of fact, it is this distinguishing
the silverwork of Bali from that of India
and so on.”
When asking about his production capacity,
he confesses that it is hard to determine
considering the order fluctuates. “Nevertheless,
his jewelry and accessories market remain
to be dominated by export market even though
still affected by the impact of bomb occurring
in Bali few years ago,” he adds.
Probably the year 1988 came in the exhilarating
year for this entrepreneur considering in
that year, when he participated in an exhibition,
he got surprised. His products on show were
bought up entirely by a foreign entrepreneur
from Australia. Though he was happy, Mudita
thought harder in order he could sell directly
to foreign market as their products were
favoured abroad.
“One of the weaknesses of the silver
entrepreneur is the marketing problem. Support
of government is greatly in demand such
as providing soft loans and opportunity
for exhibitions abroad,” he explains.
According to him, the opportunity to go
international for Bali’s entrepreneur
is remarkably significant where he could
meet in person the buyers who are really
buyers. In other words, it would no more
engaging agents. It’s important to
do to make the silverwork entrepreneur of
Bali could become a pure entrepreneur and
not just a product provider.
