It posed a collaborative activity between the Asmat Tribe and the Padang Tegal customary village, Ubud, especially in the field of the arts and culture. The Asmat art exhibition was opened by Deputy Regent of Gianyar Made Mahayastra on Monday (Mar 10) characterized by the use of greatness dress of warlord to Mahayastra as a form of respect. The exhibition lasted for five days.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee, I Ketut Budiana, said the Asmat people also had a strong belief in the ancestral spirits protecting their lives as the Balinese people did. In order to honor the ancestors, the Asmat always performed traditional ceremonies accompanied by dance performances and unique chanting. “The ways to honor the ancestors were on display at Monkey Forest Ubud,” he said.
In the exhibition, at total of 27 Asmat people held an attraction, workshop, dance and demonstrations of typical Asmat carving tradition. In addition to provide unique offerings to visitors, the exhibition was also expected to bring in a good impact on the development of tourism in Ubud and the development of tourism in Asmat County.
The Division Head of the Asmat Tourism Promotion doubling as the Group Head, Marcus Rudolf Mbait said the purpose of the activity was to introduce the Asmat craft art and culture as the support to tourism development. “Asmat tribe is one of the tribes inhabiting the southern part of Papua, flanked by two counties namely the Timika and Merauke,” he explained.
The population is divided into two, namely those living in coastal areas and inland areas. Both have differences in terms of the way of life, social structure and ritual. Asmat County itself was formed in 2014 with the capital in Agats. “This can be seen from the work of the artists in the Asmat sculpture,” he said. Marcus Rudolf Mbait added the selection of Monkey Forest as the place of activity because it had the same vision in preserving the environment. “Ubud as a destination has its own charm both in terms of the art, customs and culture,” he added.
