Cak A Cappella of Bona Returns

Cak A Cappella of Bona ReturnsCONSIDERABLE traditional arts now virtually remain in memory only. One of them is the existence of Cak a cappella that grows and develops at Bona village, Blahbatuh, Gianyar. The art experiencing its golden period in the 1970s is now almost at the verge of extinction. Such condition inspires the Gianyar County government to show off back the traditional art and perform it in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) this year.
Cak Dance is a Balinese traditional dance that has gone globally. The performance involves many artists in dim atmosphere of small lamps so that gives the impression of sacred and exotic tradition. Sound waves of the ‘Cak’ a cappella generated by the dancers voiced one another add a lively and festive impression. The kecak troupe is estimated to have existed since 1925. At Bona village, the activity of such art troupe has experienced a vacuum during the transition period of the Indonesian Independence, but in the 1970s it came back to be active as well as became a tourist destination and experienced its heyday in the 1980s.

Chief of the Cak Bona Troupe, I Gusti Nyoman Yasa, amidst the performance of Cak Bona in the Wantilan Hall of Puseh Temple at Bona customary village said that after the 1980s the Cak Bona ever receded. One of the causes was the increasing number of similar art troupes in Bali as well as one of the impacts of the opening of Jalan Bypass IB Mantra.
Before the opening of Jalan Bypass Ida Bagus Mantra, the Bona village belonged to tourism route. Each time tourists visiting Bali would certainly drop in at Bona village and watch the performance of Cak Dance. Cak Bona was presented by about 120 dancers. They were representatives of six hamlets at Bona customary village, namely the Pasedana, Kertyasa, Bona Kebon, Bona Kelod, Prajamukti and Dana where each hamlet sent 20 members of its hamlet.

Regent of Gianyar Anak Agung Gde Bharata who witnessed in person the performance of Cak Bona strongly supported the revival of Balinese traditional arts and culture such as the Cak Bona beginning to disappear. He expected the arts and culture could be back to its original cores, especially in terms of the appearance, and the typicality might not lose. “Formerly, the dancers of Kecak Bona did not look like the current ones. I do hope the hallmark can be highlighted again,” he explained. (BTN/kmb)
