“Tourism Promotion” on YouTube

gede-palgunadiACTION of the blackmail committed by police officer to tourists from the Netherlands, Kees Van Der Spek and then uploaded to YouTube site drew various reactions from a number of parties. By all means, Police Department was full of anger and then immediately relieved the rogue individual police officer. Besides, Police Department was said to plan summon to Van Der Spek for questioning. On the other hand, ordinary people, some of whom having been interviewed by print and electronic media regarding the incident gave various opinions. In essence, they seemingly agreed to what had been done by Van Der Spek through his candid camera.

There are several reasons. One of them is that such practice is frequently committed by the individual police officer. Of course, in terms of the process undertaken by the Dutch tourist who was said to be a journalist has been very noticeably prepared. It was planned by using two cameras. It means he has made some preparations in advance by compiling information first. Definitely, the information was collected from tourists suspected to have become the victims.
Aside from the action made by the individual police officer, the other video uploaded by Van Der Spek was the mischief of the immigration officer at the Ngurah Rai Airport. If we see the YouTube video, we can observe how Van Der Spek ‘bribes’ the individual of the immigration officer at the airport to help make his process smoother. Of course, like the previous incident at police station, this recording has also been accompanied with the collection of information in advance.
Meanwhile, the lineups of tourism businesspeople as revealed by the Chairman of the Association of the Indonesian Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) Bali, Ketut Ardana, the YouTube incident was a negative promotion for Bali. As watched by dozens of thousands of people, the YouTube video could tarnish the Bali tourism. It is very reasonable because anyhow Bali has been known to have friendly people, sublime culture and beautiful landscape and so on. However, the presence of this scandal will make distinctive opinion.

The question is that will the candid camera recording by Van Der Spek generate serious impact? Let us think about this matter clearly. Does it tarnish the Bali tourism image? Yes, it will tarnish the tourism image. Then, the tourist arrival will diminish, Bali tourism will be harmed and so forth. Actually, it is not like that. We should take it proportionally. Let’s take a positive boon. If police are taking firm action, we appreciate it. We also wait the immigration rank to take action to its man. Similarly, we also wait the other components of the society in order to apply more honest, intimate and proportional behavior. So far, tourism has become our source of livelihood, so that we may not undermine it because we all will find difficulty. Let’s take the positive sides and if we think conversely, the promotion on YouTube could also reap sweet results.
Obviously, we must apparently express our gratitude to Van Der Spek. We respect his work as motivation for all the parties to do better. It is a reprimand, not a punishment. (Gde Palgunadi / This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
